Britney wanted a personal album and no other producer would've allowed Britney to have such control and she genuinely seemed to enjoy making this album so at least it was HER album that flopped.

I don't know if Britney had that much control. As executive producer, will.i.am is largely responsible for the material.
In her iHeart Radio interview with Ryan Seacrest, she talked about the songs as if they weren't her own.
Ryan: "Did you feel that way?" (like an alien)
Britney: "I've felt that way before. I've had days like that."
Ryan: "A couple."
Britney: "Yeah, a couple."
Ryan: "How personal is ['Don't Cry'] to you?"
Britney: "It's pretty personal. I can kind of relate to it."
I just found that to be odd, especially if she supposedly co-wrote every song on the album.
I feel like
Britney Jean is the album will.i.am would make if he were lill.i.an (a pop girl).
