You can't really deny that it has huge T40 potential. Especially considering its longevity on iTunes and Spotify and how urban songs don't really sell, yet here it is.
As for Work, NM has more appeal IMO. Work's patois instantly swiped its chance of going all the way on T40, even if it is catchy af. NM is definitely more of a pop song, the electro-R&B production is what made everyone consider it "only urban".

Hmm. Interesting! I'm really not sure I agree but you've made me second guess. You're definitely right that it's difficult to compare to Work because it was obviously the lyrics + lyrical style that held Work back.
But for me I still don't think Needed Me sounds 'pop' leaning. Looking down the pop chart everything has some degree of light catchiness. Needed Me (just like Consideration which some people think stands a chance at mainstream release) just seems too kind of, dark, and moody, and trippy to fit in. And beyond that, it just sounds very sparsely layered, and empty. It's like electro minimalism. That's why in that fake pop radio edit we heard, they filled it in largely with dance synths. Maybe they will send something like that and it will stand more of a chance.
I would probably associate its digital+streaming success since album release to its hype within the urban community alone as an upcoming smash, but it hasn't seen Dark Horse style embracing.
