I didn't like Katy's song. What's special and good with that? I just don't understand people's taste.
Well I am a tad biased (look at my avvie...haha), but I think a lot of California Gurls's success has to do with it's timing. I mean, come on, it's the beginning of summer and the song has that summer, fast-tempo vibe. Plus, she really doesn't have that much competition for number one right now.
California Gurls was successful in the US due to cultural closeness. It had perfect timing. It's also a fun song which gives the feeling of Summer, which is the season we're in right now. California Gurls is most definitely the song of Summer 2010.

In the grand scheme of music it isn't 'special and good' but it's summer; people are slightly drunk and having BBQs, they just want something fun and that's what this song is

I never said they couldn't dislike it they just phrased their post as if they were comparing it to John Lennon or something which is obviously not the context it should be taken in. It's a 2010 pop song so judge it as that, if you don't like it then fine but looking at it in the context of all the music throughout history as a whole is pretty pointless...this is my opinion if that's OK

I gotcha. You're right. You can't compare a song that uses a "u" instead of an "i" in "girls" to other music in history. It's just a straight out fun pop song, not a lyrically deep song that's supposed to change the world. Just like you said.
