This tournament has been long and hard-fought, but we have finally reached its conclusion. After six rounds, 268 votes and 62 fallen one-hit wonders, ATRL has crowned its champion. Is it #2 "Lovefool", the deceptively sunny Swedish ode to unrequited love, or #11 "Bittersweet Symphony", the lush icon of Britpop and teen sex romps, those definitive '90s trends? It was a comeback victory, with one song taking a massive early lead before the other marched to a blowout of its own.
By a vote of 18-11, the winner of ATRL March Madness 2014 is...
(11) "Bittersweet Symphony"
The Verve
Congratulations to The Verve for their well-deserved title of the greatest one-hit wonder ever! Though they entered the tournament as underdogs, they dominated round after round on their path to their crown, capping a year defined by major upsets. And thank you so much to everyone who participated these past few weeks! It's been a lot of fun debating our old favorites together. (What do you say we meet back up same time next year for another go?) If you want to see the complete results, and relive all the great memories, the final tournament draw is posted below (or find a larger version here):
I am currently open for suggestions on what the theme should be. I need ideas.
Also, I just discovered I was spelling "Bitter Sweet Symphony" wrong this entire tournament...
This was awesome.
But if you want ATRL to participate, you'll have to sell out and do something very Pop
Right on top my head:
--ultimate break up songs by ATRL pop girls. Gather the 64 most popular break ups songs and you have a competition.
-- Or you can do the same with love songs.
--you can do Female popstars vs Male popstars. 32 popular Pop songs from each gender. Of course, only chose the ones ATRL knows
--Videos? Take 64 videos from ATRL favorites artists and let's see who'll win.

No, **** them for putting a space in there. I change my vote to "Lovefool", which could possibly stand to be split into two words.
Anyway, I had so much fun with this.
I, for one, am happy Natalie didn't go all the way. Yeah, she's great, but most AC format radio stations have "Torn" on a regular playlist, and she has enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy) more than her alotted fifteen. I should have pushed harder for Meredith. "Bitch" really embodies that OHW spirit, in the sense that it's very much of-its-time and is appropriately hokey, though, I don't know if we thought of it as "hokey" in 1997. It's a great statement song that could have only existed in the post-Alanis 90s. 90s women be shopping taking ownership of pejorative terms and testing the limits imposed by the FCC. (Just a few years later a scantily clad Britney would come along and undo a lot of that, but we kinda love her for it.) Meredith was part of a really special time.

"Torn" technically peaked at #42, so it's probably for the best anyway.
Poor Meredith. Not only was she unable to capitalize on the spirit of Lilith to get a follow-up hit, but her feminist anthem will forever be confused as one of Alanis' lesser singles. Talk about adding insult to an injured legacy. I was really rooting for her in this tournament. "Bitch" should have been in the final four, along with "Hit 'em Up Style (Oops!)."

Ooh! Add Youngstown's "I'll Be Your Everything" and Krystal's "Supergirl!" to the list. We may have to start this at the Final Four stage, but Leslie Carter should definitely win.
