I agree with several members.
For me, the "manga style" animation doesn't quite read as well in anime form. There's a reason why the original animation for "Sailor Moon" was made that way, because it reads better for television. The manga style works beautifully on paper, but it's a little jarring on screen, specifically with the eyes being way too big and drawing way too much focus. The pointed manga-styled faces also leaves little variety in animation between characters on screen, so every character ends up looking virtually the same, just with different hair. It's very strange. The manga on-screen style definitely needs to be tweaked with.
As for the theme song, I don't really have a problem with it. The theme song production sounds a little
generic, like it could be the theme to any anime, but it's not as terrible as people are making it out to be.
And finally, the transformation...
I definitely have mixed feelings about it.
The transformation in "Sailor Moon Crystal" is all gloss, and lacks the art of the original "Sailor Moon" series. It definitely needed to be animated, there's no question about that. But, again, it's still not bad. The transformation has its moments and gives us really interesting angles. The twisting perspective as the ribbons surrounds Usagi's legs and feet to create Sailor Moon's boots was pretty cool and it took some major talent to create that specific interesting perspective angle.
In closing, I don't really agree with criticisms against the "lack of comedy" in "Sailor Moon Crystal." It's a reboot. I personally wouldn't want to watch the exact same series repeated as a reboot -- it needs to be different somehow. I don't mind it being "more serious." If I want to watch "the comedy," I'll just watch the original "Sailor Moon" series.
