Well in 88 years no East Asian has ever had even a lead nomination...
Of course, many of their best performances are in Asian languages, and generally the Academy doesn't even want to touch those.
For next year the main possibilities right now seem to be:
Oscar Isaac (depending on if you define a Guatemalan as a poc) for a film by the director of Hotel Rwanda and In the Name of the Father;
Ruth Negga for a movie about the Loving v. Virginia interracial marriage court case - by the director of the well-reviewed Mud and Take Shelter;
and
David Oyelowo who was robbed for Selma, in a movie about a Botswanian prince who married a white Englishwoman in the 40s; he eventually became president. Interestingly, his white Englishwoman wife will also be in the film; perhaps he took the role because it hit close to home.
The second and third seem coincidentally similar in the same year, but the Academy could go for both if they're good.
