I think Gaga embraced the artificial aspects of pop music at first. The Fame (Monster) all seemed like a well-thought out parody of pop culture, all with great music supporting her vision.
Her interactions with her fanbase are ultimately what killed her streak. She got an inflated ego and listened to EVERYTHING her fans told her - but all they tell her is how amazing, abstract and perfect she is. That is certainly not always the case. She's also terrible at responding to criticism and doesn't use it to rebound. A perfect example would be the lessons she should've learned from Born This Way that she only accelerated in ARTPOP.
And despite the personal issues behind the scenes... firing Troy and her old team was one of the stupidest things she's ever done. Honestly, I think sometimes they give her criticism that could've helped ARTPOP, but she wouldn't hear any of it.
