Dont you agree that the most important goal should be to stabilize Syria?
Do you think its possible to achieve by supporting rebel groups in overthrowing Assad? There are hundreds of rebel groups, radical and moderate, some of them work together, many of them fight each other. Even other US allies like Kurds, Turkmens and Turkish backed rebels hate each other. Why do you think the situation wont end up like in Libya, with civil war going on as the rebel factions fight for power in political vacuum?
Most of the Syrian civilians are concentrated in the government held areas, including christians, armenians, yazidis, alawites and other minorities. What will be with them, if the regime falls and the radical rebels get to them first?
Assads position is weak, it all stands on support of Russia, and as has been already pointed out to you, Russians are willing to sacrifice him if needed.
