Even if she was having a flop era, that's no good excuse to just leave. The album isn't even out yet. I can get if the album ended up being bad, but all indications point to the fact that R8 will end being one of her best albums when it's released in full.

The issue people have isn't "flopping," per se. It's more the cavalier disregard she seems to have for the music as a whole. If she pushed the music and it just didn't connect with the public, no one would blame her. But as the case is, it's just hard, in my opinion, for a lot of people to care about the era/music or take it seriously, when she herself doesn't appear to be taking it seriously.
And yes, "she's taking risks," bla bla bla... but there's a difference between making/releasing "risky" music and undertaking a poor release strategy. Release all the risky music you want, but do it in a manner that shows us you care.
