Yes, it has always been the case. Red and Speak Now absolutely got no momentum come their Grammy elgibility came. She always needed to work extra hard for the album to continue the hype until the grammy season.
Fearless was chugging along come Grammy night because of alot of factors: YBWM was hot off the heels of pop crossover, she's swept the CMAs and consuquently the AMAs, released Fearless Platinum Edition and most inportantly, the VMA/Kanye thing became a national sensation. It basically was the perfect storm.
1989 was coming off 5 consecutive top 10 hits, as well as her streaming stand the past summer and inarguably the most talked about tour of the year with all the surprise guests.
