The discount definitely sped up Neon Lights' climb but it was already moving up on iTunes because of radio play. It could've gotten to where it is even if they hadn't discounted it at first, it just would've taken a bit longer.
Also, I agree that she shouldn't be taking steps backwards just to get hits. Having more pop orientated songs aren't necessarily a bad thing but they just need to be more mature sounding. I think GYHAB was a perfect example of what radio-intended tracks from Demi should sound like. It's super catchy but not the slightest bit generic imo.
