Actually most people don't give a dman about whether it's lip-synched or not actually...
What the general public gets is:
1. The music on radio
2. the videos
3. The echos what an artist has done in the press
The combination of the three helps you get a smash
The stans go further and:
1. Check the live performances
2. Go to their faves' concerts whenever they can afford it or can go
It's true that for those 2 latter points we are spoiled, but it's not what helps one's fave get momentum amongst the general public... Sad but the honest truth
