Honestly, Damita Jo is a really interesting album. Not a favourite, but I've really grown to appreciate it more with this rate, and there are some very cool moments.

It's so underrated. It's better than AFY imo and much more cohesive. I love it!

Right. It would be among her best if she had just edited it a bit, too much on some of the filler.
I appreciate getting a good fun record after her years of seriousness, and it isn't as patchy as All For You.
I maintain that Damita Jo would be better if she had just killed Thinkin' Bout My Ex and Warmth and maybe replaced My Baby or Like You Don't Love with one of the scrapped Rich Harrison tracks. They sound a bit dated now but would have knocked in 2004.
To me, it will never be better than All For You because it doesn't have anything that nails it as hard as the best of AFY. That album had sequencing issues but really only needed one or two cuts to be really solid, whereas Damita Jo had a good 4 or 5 songs that could have easily been replaced.
I think the strength of how she could effortlessly take on any genre for her 80s/90s work became the weakness of her early 2000s albums.
Like her early albums usually weave different genres an interesting and innovative album, but the genre hopping on AFY and DJ give those albums a sort of patchwork stitched together kind of feel.
Like imagine if she'd done a full on disco/dance album for Damita Jo with like All Nite/Island Life/R&B Junkie/Slo Love/Put Your Hand On
The difference between the two for me is that 20YO is inoffensively average all the way through, while like half (okay, a third) of Discipline is actually cute but then the rest is godawful.
