Well, Canada has never had a big music market, so to get to 300k really is an earth-shattering accomplishment. The digital market hasn't taken off in Canada like it has in the US and UK for reasons I've already stated before: iTunes is the only music provider in the country, bad copyright laws mean that providers don't bring their services to Canada, and Canada has the higher P2P sharing figures than any industrialised nation on earth. So the fact that Poker Face could sell so many legal copies is quite something, and Lady GaGa in just two years has become perhaps one of the top most successful international acts in Canada.
|
In the US and the UK virtually all downlaods are from iTunes, other sites make up about 10-15% of the market so the fact that it is the only provider in Canada should only make downloads marginally lower, as it is they are not even close. Illegal file sharing has been a factor everywhere, perhaps not to the same extent as in Canada but nevertheless more songs are downloaded on file sharing sites then on download store's in virtually every country.
I'm glad that Lady GaGa is doing so well in Canada I think breaking the Canadian market helped her to break into the US market.

I won't snap at you for saying that anymore At this stage it's true, Telephone should be in or close to the top ten by now. Alot of people have heard it, so they either don't like it or are waiting for the video to come out to take interest in it.
Telephone imo is the worst song on The Fame Monster. The only thing it has going for it is Beyonce, I find it more irritating over catchy sometimes... I like the song the song, just not as much as I thought I would.

LOL @ People saying "Blah Blah Blah" wouldn't do well in the UK.
She's doing so well. I'm so proud of my girl.
Edit: And her album is number one on iTunes! I didn't think it'd get that high since "TiK ToK" wasn't as big there as it was in other countries.

It's mostly the file sharing, which given current loopholes mean that the legality of P2P is much more murky in Canada, causing lawsuits to fail.
And, of course, as I said, Canada has never had a big music market. The explosions of sales only started in 2008, and the effect is to be fully realised, while the US and UK have had increasing digital sales since 2004-2005. Perhaps the digital download numbers from 2003 would be more similar to Canada's current ones (with population differences factored in). Canada has always been about album sales, where 3x platinum used to be 300,000. To underline this, Avril sold 500k with her album but her single sales came nowhere near that.
Also, I think the main point is that nobody has ever sold 300k before. The number itself doesn't really matter, the significance is that it's a number that nobody would have thought possible three years ago. More people own an mp3 of Poker Face than any other song in Canada, and you can't say the same for any other nation on earth.

I didn't mean to critisise your initial post btw, I just thought it would be interesting to compare. I'm Happy to hear that the Canadian Digital Market is growing at a faster than expected rate

Tik Tok has sold really well for a song that only peaked at number 4, I think the release was at a bad time for a new Artist. She could have been number 1 if she decided to release early this year instead, but that's just my thougths on it...

Is there a Digital songs top 50 for Canada? I've never seen any weekly sales figures for the Canadian Hot 100. It would be interesting to compare this years figures with last years, that way you can tell how fast the market is growing.
