Reeces' Best Of '09: Top Singles (47-45)
47. Daughtry “No Surprise”
“Don’t be surprised when we hate this tomorrow, God know we tried to find an easier way”
When you think about Chris Daughtry and band members, you immediately think about the smash hit ‘Home‘ or their first single ‘It‘s Not Over‘, while ‘No Surprise’ it’s clearly not as good as those, it has something that makes it exciting for some reason. This track discusses the time that it takes for a relationship to end as it describe memorable moments from a relationship that is pretty much destined to end. Chris Daughtry’s powerful vocals shine along a rock melody and a nice guitar crunch that most of their songs have, I think I would’ve appreciated this new project a little more if they would’ve taken a risk and played with a new sound (Long Way Down from Timbaland’s new album sounds great), they just took the safe route. Either way, Daughtry always has a safe spot in my playlists, and No Surprise wasn’t the exception this year.
46. Eminem “Beautiful”
“So don’t let ‘em say you ain’t beautiful, they can all get ****ed, just stay true to you”
There is no denying that Eminem‘s music keeps going downhill with every album, however he managed to release something that sounds similar to the old school Em we all love. ‘Beautiful’ is the type of music he should be making, enough of being silly and making parodies, it got old a long time ago. This track is very deep and it deals with the rapper’s different feelings and insecurities. The chorus is irresistible and the ‘Reach Out’ sample is brilliant, Eminem‘s rapping skills are still as good as they were during the beginning of the decade. He pays tribute to Detroit in the music video, giving a more personal vibe to the song. Like I said before, this is the type of music that he should be making, I have no idea why he changed his style and started singing with that annoying Arabian accent. This track is gold, and I’m hoping that with Relapse 2 coming out this year, he turns it around and goes back to his roots.
45. Taylor Swift “White Horse”
“I had so many dreams about you and me, happy endings, now I know”
White Horse is the most intimate and emotional track that Taylor Swift has released so far followed by her high school crush confessions in ’Teardrops On My Guitar’. I think at this point, we all know, that Swift is a fantastic songwriter. In this song she uses fairy tale dreams metaphors that at the end collide with a hard and cold reality. It’s also worth mentioning that this is the best she has sounded, while she doesn’t have the powerful voice that many other female country singers possess, the emotion she puts into this track is what makes a difference for me. The video tells the story of the song from beginning to end and we can see a Taylor breaking down in tears at the end of the video. Overall, White Horse is simply brilliant, it's a sad story about heartbreak told in a clever way and delivered with a lot emotion. How can you not love this girl?
