Hozier Hozier
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Hozier is probably one of the more refreshing alternative acts to hit the scene in 2014. No one really expected to see something like them sprinting to the Top 3 on the Hot 100, did they? Take Me To Church is obviously impressive and great, as are many album tracks on this album. I was pleasantly surprised (even though it may not be my 'thing'). |
Alex G DSU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This album is totally straying from my normal taste, lol, and I found it randomly on Pitchfork Kind of stupid but I really enjoyed whatever's going on in this album: the acoustic, garage-like aesthetic demonstrated is somehow fitting for modernism as well as throwback. It's confusing but I like it. |

Junglepussy Satisfaction Guaranteed
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This girl is seriously the **** I really love her music and this album (is it even an album...?) is amazing and very well put together. Only problem is I generally can not "do" Soundcloud-based artists because I'm a Spotify child. Either way, I need Junglepussy to continue butchering the rap game and serve with whatever her future may hold. |
SBTRKT Wonder Where We Land
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Somehow I slept on SBTRKT for quite a while, ignoring their debut which was likely a mistake. But I gave 'em a shot with this, their less-paid-attention-to sophomore album, and really enjoyed it, tbh. Some very next-level sounding productions are present on this record. My only complaint would be that it's a vivid (yet somehow successful) attempt at staying modernized and cool. Luv anyways. |

Slow Magic How To Run Away
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This group is one I didn't know til this year, which is a shame! I was super super super close to seeing them live this past semester but couldn't last minute which I'm very sad about... for sure would've been full of energy and life. A past-halfway-decent electronic act and album. |
iamamiwhoami Blue
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I've never been the most blatant iamamiwhoami fan, certainly, but I'd be a fool to not check for her when she releasing something! This album is certainly less stunning than her previous works, but it's also stunning moreso in other ways. I loved a lot of songs from this album and thought the thematic nature of the album was on point, so what's more to ask for from this artist? |

Jessie J Sweet Talker
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
From someone who has been following Jessie J from even before her debut days, this album is probably her best in a lot of ways. It showcases her vocals the best, it panders to mainstream audiences the best and it's probably Jessie's riskiest thus far because she allowed other people to write for her. I think it paid off (although it is sorta my least favorite of hers). For her, this album was great. She's so determined and the fact that Bang Bang even KINDA happened shows how determined she is. Always ready to see what she's doing next (even though she's seemingly awful at times). |
J. Cole 2014 Forest Hills Drive
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
J. Cole releasing is always a pleasant time - in 2014, he came at the butt end very unexpectedly, but it was to most fans' pleasure. His album seemed like it was supposed to come out in 2014, even if a rush release was necessary! His bars and flow on this album are very truthful and grand, even if it may be a step down from his previous, Born Sinner. This record [roved J. Cole knows how to toss together a grand body of work. |

Kylie Minogue Kiss Me Once
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Never in my life have I been a fan of Kylie Minogue, and I'm still really not - but in 2014 I started to indulge a little bit to make myself knowledgeable. I followed the release of this album and listened to it in full many times, much to my surprise of liking. She knows her way well around pop music. I get low-key old-but-still-trying vibes like I do from Madonna (not that I'd understand) which is slightly unpleasant, but this album is still effortlessly great in a lot of ways. |
Jennifer Lopez A.K.A.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Miss Lopez was doing the most this era. It clearly bombed so she needed a savior, and that was the Booty remix with Iggy which I despise, even with its undeniable hit factor... however, we're leaving that in 2014 where it will forever stay. This is one of the most panned albums of this year but the highlights of the album for me, as cheap as they may be, are honestly pretty kute. What's most annoying to me is that she demoted the best and most forward-thinking songs to deluxe. Typical and unsurprising |

top albums recap!
Justin Bieber • Journals
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This album was very low key and pretty much ignored by everyone, but of course the moment Bieber does something of quality and value people stop paying attention There's a lot of promise and greatness in this collection of songs is probably his best thus far. I'll keep checking for him because he's undeniably talented, even if somewhat of a douche. Plus he's hot... so. |

Broods • Evergreen
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
In the vein of New Zealand pop that Lorde so happily blazed, Broods is one step behind serving cute, alternative jams. There's something very fragile about Broods and their soft, bright aesthetic, and it's also this innocence that seems to be a big chunk of their appeal. In some ways, they're kind of boring and snoozey - on the other hand, there's a lot of talent in this duo. |
Taylor Swift • 1989
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Taylor is obviously one of the most easy-to-hate stars in the scene but this album really changed that for her. Everyone who hates on her can't even deny the divine abilities of Blank Space and Shake It Off to get you BOPPING. Going full pop was Taylor's best idea in years and it's a wonder she didn't do it sooner. But I do hope she returns to somewhat country later on, she slays that too. People do too much on this girl, she's a LEGEND. Still kinda annoyed that she won't let it be on Spotify though because does she REALLY have money to lose? Bye. |

Banks • Goddess
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Banks has certainly done a great job at crafting and mastering the aesthetic she's got going on, the whole grayscale, soft and electric get-up. There's something that seems a bit self-righteous about her which irks me, but I won't deny that she's on the right track with her sound and I hope she continues to make music and tackle her low points. There are a lot of great songs on the album but as a body of work, they tend to get lost in the shuffle and it falls flat in the grand scheme of the LP. Lots of great songs still came out of this album! |
Kiesza • Sound Of A Woman
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Kiesza, Kiesza, Kiesza. This is one musical act I don't think anyone expected out of 2014, but it was a pleasant surprise if I do say so myself! With this LP Kiesza showed that she was able to do more than create some nostalgic 90s dance throwback jams, but whether or not she showcased herself successfully is up in the air. I still want to know more about Kiesza, who and what she is, what she's supposed to signify, where she belongs. Nevertheless, there are many great songs and her unique voice and sound shines through in this excellent LP. |

So many great picks but I see Metacritic's worst album of the year here too
Kiesza, Banks, Kylie, iamamiwhoami, Hozier
I think the release method is what messed up Justin's album. If he followed a normal release schedule it would've been more in the eyes of people and, maybe, someone more would've changed his mind on him. Well, too late.
