In Square Circle is a 1985 studio album released by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder (his twentieth overall). The album features the hits "Part-Time Lover", "Go Home" and "Overjoyed" (which was left off Wonder's 1979 album Journey through the Secret Life of Plants and re-recorded for this album). The album won Wonder the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 28th Grammy Awards (his fourth award in the category, and his thirteenth Grammy overall).
Honestly I don't recognize anything from this tracklist... I'm only really familiar with his 70s stuff.
Following the departure of two band members, the band regrouped and redirected their sound for their third record. Departing from their previous work, the Banshees incorporated synthesizers and drum machines for the first time. They particularly experimented in electronic music on a couple of tracks: the electro-dance minimalism "Red Light" and the atmospheric synth-based piece "Lunar Camel". Kaleidoscope also marks the debut of guitarist John McGeoch and new drummer Budgie.
Yess this album is fantastic! Siouxsie has a lot of attitude and personality and it's goth while not being a pretentious mess.
Hotter than July is the nineteenth album by Stevie Wonder, originally released on Motown's Tamla label on September 29, 1980. Despite the wide critical acclaim for Wonder's previous works such as Songs in the Key of Life and Innervisions, Hotter than July was his first album eligible for platinum status, as Motown sales records before 1977 were not audited by the RIAA. This was his most successful album in the UK, peaking at #2 and producing four top ten singles.
Looking at the tracklist I now know where one member got part of his name from!
The Works is the eleventh studio album by British rock band Queen, released in February 1984. A partial return to their rock roots, although with a much lighter approach, the record has also the heaviest electronics amongst all group albums. In comparison, rock was mostly absent on their previous effort Hot Space, which gave room to dance and funk with the use of analogue synths and brass. Freddie Mercury praised the album saying it helped re-establish the band, especially in Europe. The Works is estimated to have sold twelve million copies worldwide.
This has none of my favorite Queen singles tbh, but none of them are my least favorite so ok!
Vivid is the debut album by the American heavy metal band Living Colour, which was released on May 3, 1988. The band was discovered by Mick Jagger while playing a show at punk club CBGB's in 1987. The fact that Living Colour is an all-black heavy metal band drew much attention to the band and the album, which contained three singles and became one of the most popular albums of 1988, reaching #6 on the Billboard 200 and certified double platinum by the RIAA. The band would later receive a Grammy for their next studio release, Time's Up. The song "Funny Vibe" features a cameo appearance from Public Enemy's Chuck D and Flavor Flav. Vivid is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It also contains a cover version of the Talking Heads' "Memories Can't Wait."
Never heard of this! It's a Metal album though, so it's probably not my type....
The Broadway Album is the twenty-fourth studio album by director, composer, actress and singer Barbra Streisand, released by Columbia Records on November 4, 1985. Consisting mainly of classic show tunes, the album marked a major shift in Barbra Streisand's career. Streisand had spent ten years appearing in musicals and singing standards on her albums in the 1960s. Beginning with the album Stoney End in 1971 and ending with the album Emotion in 1984, Streisand sang mostly rock and disco oriented songs for Columbia records. Noted Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim personally penned additional lyrics for the songs "Putting It Together" and "Send in the Clowns" on request of the singer. The album, originally released on the Columbia label and subsequently re-released by Columbia and Sony Records, was a critical and commercial success. First certified gold by the RIAA on January 13, 1986, it reached four times platinum on January 31, 1995.
Another Barbs album... They're broadway songs which isn't my type but I know they have their fans.
1984 (written as MCMLXXXIV on the album's front cover) is the sixth studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen. 1984 remains one of Van Halen's most popular albums in terms of sales (with 12 million copies sold in the U.S. alone), Billboard chart performance (reaching #2 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts and remaining there for 5 weeks, behind Michael Jackson's mega-selling Thriller, on which Eddie Van Halen played guitar) and in terms of memorable singles - including the #1 Billboard Pop hit "Jump", Top #13 hits "Panama" and "I'll Wait" and the MTV sensation, "Hot for Teacher". 1984 was the last, full-length Van Halen album to feature the band's iconic frontman David Lee Roth until 2012's A Different Kind of Truth and the final full-length album with all four original members.
