Somebody That I Used To Know
Gotye featuring Kimbra
(Making Mirrors)
"Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over, but had me believing it was always something that I'd done..."
#3 in 2011: Florence + The Machine, "Shake It Out"
#3 in 2010: Lady Antebellum, "American Honey"
#3 in 2009: AFI, "Medicate"
#3 in 2008: Adele, "Chasing Pavements"
"We've never seen any song make a deeper or more immediate connection with so many people. It's a really special recording and video" - John Watson
At #3 is the single of the year! "Somebody That I Used To Know", by Gotye featuring Kimbra, was released in 2011 and was #1 for 8 weeks in Australia - his hometown - on August of that year. That was how I discovered the song, but I confess that I didn't like it for the first time I heard. The song only grew on me due to worldwide promotion. Although, I loved the video for the song the first time I watched it, which made it nominated for Video Of The Year on my 2011's awards!
#2
Blown Away
Carrie Underwood
(Blown Away)
"There's not enough rain in Oklahoma to wash the sins out of that house ..."
#2 in 2011: Foster The People, "Helena Beat"
#2 in 2010: Arcade Fire, "The Suburbs"
#2 in 2009: Carrie Underwood, “Cowboy Casanova”
#2 in 2008: Madonna, "Give It 2 Me"
"Dangerous, but irresistible." - Billy Dukes
Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" is at #2. The song was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance on 2013's Grammy Awards, which is more than deserved! It's a different from Carrie Underwood, something that I've never heard before, which made me immediately fall in love with the track. Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear wrote the song which talks "about a motherless girl who prays a tornado will blow away her abusive, alcoholic father along with her painful memories and childhood home". With powerful and emotional lyrics, the song still makes me shiver... even after months!

Never Let Me Go
Florence + The Machine
(Ceremonials)
"And the arms of the ocean are carrying me, and all this devotion was rushing out of me..."
#1 in 2011: Adele, "Set Fire To The Rain"
#1 in 2010: Florence + The Machine, "Cosmic Love"
#1 in 2009: Katy Perry, "Thinking Of You"
#1 in 2008: Kings of Leon, "Use Somebody"
"Big enough to bring a stadium audience to its knees, it's more structured and less hectic than anything on her debut, but still remains packed with eccentricities." - Robert Copsey
"Never Let Me Go" is Florence + The Machine second #1 in a year-end chart. And the formula is: a beautiful ballad (written by Florence Welch, Paul Epworth & Tom Hull; produced by Paul Epworth) + an unique and powerful voice (Florence Welch) + an amazing band that made it possible to sound perfectly (The Machine). When I heard Ceremonials for the first time, the song immediately became my favorite from the album! On January last year, I watched this song live, which makes me love it more! Also, the lyrics are more than I wanted from a song with this title and the combination of piano and drums were well done, making it a perfection!
The votes to my year awards will open tomorrow! Are you all ready?
Also, here's a snack of what I've been listening recently cause I have not updated my personal countdown for more than one month!
