A$AP Rocky - Long.Live.A$AP
Released - January 15, 2013



There is a surprising amount of hip hop albums as my favourites of the decade and its how we start things off. This album is filled with insane, smooth beats and brilliant lyrics. He pulls out a lot of really great ideas and executes them all very well. The beats pull influence from a lot of different musical eras and pays homage to them really well without sacrificing a modernized sound. Basically, it feels like its already a classic legendary hip hop album.

My favourite song is probably still "Fashion Killa". The beat is so smooth and sleek and even though some have called the lyrics 'braggy' I think they're awesome. Other shout outs include "Hell" which features Santigold, and feels like a seamless collaboration between the two. "Ghetto Symphony" is one of the biggest examples of him pulling a lot of ideas that seem to not work but he executes it perfectly. "1Train" features everybody and it just feels so grand and expansive, truly a monument in its own right. Lastly, "Phoenix" is probably my other major favourite - a shining moment lyrically. Though truly, all of the songs are amazing in their own right.

Japandroids - Celebration Rock
Released - June 5, 2012



This isn't actually the type of music I generally enjoy. Its pretty hard (well for me) rock and yet I find it really addicting and its been a bit of a staple for me. The lyrics are what really hooks me in though. And I liked the fact that there are again lots of different influences here including classic rock and a more punk style.

"The House That Heaven Built" is insane, I love it so much. Brilliant lyrics, high energy all the way through, really addicting. "Continuous Thunder" is an amazing album closer, very expansive and the drums that kick in are enchanting. "The Nights Of Wine And Roses" has a clever balance between more subdued and explosive, its a grower though. Lastly "Younger Us" is punchy and an easy to get into track with cool punk influences.

Feist - Metals
Released - October 4, 2011



There was a surprising amount of hesitation with Feist's Metals. I think I can get it, its far less indie folksy pop and a lot more raw and folk-style. That's actually what made me prefer it to say, The Reminder, since I felt like the songs were more personal and genuine. A lot of the songs have an almost unfinished quality which is really nice to here, but I like how she didn't entirely give up her songwriting quirks that make her so great, they're just sprinkled throughout.

"The Bad In Each Other" is a good example of the overall sound of the album, its also my favourite Feist single. "Caught In A Long Wind" is another favourite of mine simply because I like slower, mellow songs and her vocals are so beautiful on this track. "Anti-Pioneer" continues those same sentiments although I like how this one is more folksy. "Cicadas And Gulls" reminds me of living on the West Coast and having endless rainy days and cloudy days at the beach so I like it for the emotions it pulls out, and "Graveyard" is another track that pulls out emotions from me and feels like a darker but brilliant track.





And an honourable mention to the bonus track "Pine Moon" which isn't on spotify.

It was because at first I wanted to do a perfect 40/40/40 with all of my lists but that went out the window.

2014 was the first year that I actually really listened to a lot though. Usually I do like 30-40 albums per year but this past year I did more like 60ish which was a lot for me.

Celebration Rock is brilliant! So many songs that just make you go WOW. I also love Metals. Anti-Pioneer is my favorite. I'm glad you gave it some love.
