Duffy - Rockferry
Average Rate: 6.922
Highest Score: 10 (1x)
Lowest Score: 3 (1x)
Rockferry, the first single from Duffy's debut album of the same name, originally surfaced in 2006 as a free download link by the Observer Music Monthly. Duffy wrote the song with collaborator Bernard Butler, the Walter Afanasieff to her Mariah, the Patrick Leonard to her Madonna. The song's haunting mood perfectly captures the feelings Duffy had when writing, but even she admits she had a hard time adjusting to the finished product:

I wanted it to be big-sounding, quite noisy and epic, but I remember not really loving that song when I first heard it. You don't write a song about struggle then listen to it the next day and forget everything you were feeling. Now that I'm going out and performing it live, I enjoy the song as a song.

The song entered the UK charts at 45, but served as a nice appetizer for the massive main chorus that was yet to come in 2008.

I'm surprised 'You Got the Dirtee Love' is so low... I didnt think his addition was that bad One of the Brits more successful collaborations I thought.

Duffy - Rain on Your Parade
Average Rate: 7.063
Highest Score: 10 (1x)
Lowest Score: 1 (1x)
Let's flashback to fifteen years ago, where huge selling albums were left alone.
Now let's go back to 2008. Duffy, coming on the heels of an album that had sold three - four million copies worldwide in nine months, obviously had to do something to prolong the momentum.
Keep releasing singles off of the album? Poppycock!
Make an eight-track EP? People, that's balderdash! We were still living in the pre-Gaga times.
So, clearly, Rockferry had to be re-released. Rain on Your Parade was the first new single Duffy had recorded since 2007. Its brassiness evokes James Bond themes - a sentiment mentioned in reviews. One can't help but wonder if Duffy had been promised to have the theme for Quantum of Solace, only to be screwed over in the end?
Oh well. She still got this track, which produced her second top ten hit in Italy. SMASH.
Fun fact: This is the first time Duffy released a single without Butler's cooperation; she wrote this with Steve Booker.

Ace, if it's not too much trouble, could you forward me my pm? I didn't save a copy and I have no idea what I rated stuff.

Lily Allen - Alfie
Average Rate: 7.094
Highest Score: 10 (4x)
Lowest Score: 1 (1x)
The first surprising elimination for me - I remember how much this was LOVED in 2007 here. But we were still Popfusion then.
The song, released alongside the dearly departed Shame for You as the fourth single from Lily's debut, Alright, Still, sampled a song that won the 1966 Eurovision Contest - Sandie Shaw's "Puppet on a String." It was meant as a loving ode to her younger stoner of a brother, but he didn't necessarily take it that way.

I thought it was really flattering [Laughs]. I thought he'd be really, really happy because it proved to him how much I loved him, that I care about him, and I want him to do something with his life. I suppose his paranoia — induced by smoking so much weed — made him think, "Why are you trying to be mean?

The video drew the most acclaim of any Lily Allen video, featuring an actual puppet in lieu of her little bro. I suspect some votes only heard the light, bright melody and Lily's accompanying video and didn't really hear everything else that was on display here.
Fun Fact: She wrote this with Greg Kurstin, who would go on to produce her second - and, as of now, last - album.

"Alfie" was one of the best songs on this rate.
9.5 from me - and, by the way, this and The Fear are her best videos...

Duffy - Stepping Stone
Average Rate: 7.109
Highest Score: 10 (2x)
Lowest Score: 4 (1x)
I made a bit of a mistake earlier when I stated that Rain on Your Parade was the first time Duffy and Steve Booker had worked together, as he produced and co-wrote this song with her (and another song too, which won't be seen for quite a while.) This was one of the last songs Duffy wrote and recorded for Rockferry, and, by her words, she needed an emotional outlet.

With 'Stepping Stone,' I had the intention to say something. It's quite personal where other songs are more about storytelling or creating scenarios. I never really use music as a way of communicating my own feelings - I do it because I enjoy music. On this occasion, I abused my authority and let my emotions in. I really love performing it live.

Duffy originally wanted this song to sound like a lost Supremes track, but changed her mind when she heard this version. Released as the fourth single in the UK, and third single everywhere else (except mainland Europe, for some reason), it performed less than adequately. In retrospect, it's hard to believe that Serious and Distant Dreamer were never officially released.

Why is Duffy getting murdered?
Now she only has two songs left.
Well, well, well and Rockferry should still be in this.
