The last chart of 2008 and the first of 2009 has Kanye West in the pole position with his heartbreak anthem, Heartless. It's his third week at the top with the track, making it his longest-running #1 ever on the personal chart, besting the 2-week stint of Good Life in 2007. Any additional time at the penthouse is probably unlikely as a pair of female pop stars, Britney Spears and Taylor Swift, as well as reliable rock stars, Incubus, occupy the dangerous waters of the top 5. Bursting into the top 10 this week is Leona Lewis, with her soaring cover of Snow Patrol's Run, and Kings of Leon continue on their crash course with the top 5.

Who are the big gainers in the lower rungs of the chart? The Killers continue their ascension with psychadelic Spaceman, closing in on the top 10. John Legend has picked up steam in the past week with the extremely catchy Green Light.

Three debuts this week. The first comes from MGMT with Kids, a song that all of a sudden clicked with me and now I can't get enough of it. Electric Feel peaked at #4 in 2008. Next up is Jay Z f/ Santogold, with the lead single off the upcoming Notorious B.I.G. movie. The "Brooklyn we go hard, we go hard" chorus, together with Santogold's closing verse, make the song a knockout. And last but not least, its the new single from The Fray, which did take a while to grow on me. However, they are no strangers to success as How To Save A Life did peak at #4 in 2007.

First official chart of 2009. January 2nd - January 8th, 2009

Ring in the new year with the biggest selling albums artist in the world right now, as Britney Spears ascends to the #1 position with 'Circus', the song that is most likely to be the first big single of the year on the charts. She will not have an easy time at maintaining her reign with Taylor Swift scooting up to #3 with 'Love Story', and meanwhile, we get two new, strong additions to the top 5. Kings Of Leon are up to #4 with 'Use Somebody', hot on the heels of the #3 peak of 'Sex On Fire' in late 2008. Then there is Leona Lewis, who is up to #5 with the fantastic cover of Snow Patrol's 'Run'. She is no stranger to success on the chart as 'Bleeding Love' was #1 for 9 weeks in 2008, and 'Better In Time' hit #9.

Other tracks to watch out for are The Killers, who storm into the top 10 this week with 'Spaceman' at #7. This is their 10th top hit, and sure to be their 10th top 5 hit. Only song of theirs to not make the top 10 was 'For Reasons Unknown', which peaked at #11. Also looking strong is Lady GaGa, who will try to follow the multi-week #1 success of 'Just Dance' with her latest.

We've got three good debuts this week. The first is from Lily Allen, with her first song to chart since 'Alfie' crashed out at #15 in 2006. However, 'Smile' did peak at a strong #5, and that album did well on my yer-end chart. Also new is Beyonce with her stunning 'Halo'. She now has three tracks charting simultaneously, two of which already hit the top 10. Last up is AC/DC with 'Big Jack' - which I think is one of their best songs ever.

January 9th - January 15th, 2008

Two of the biggest female pop stars on the planet right now occupy the top two positions this week, as Britney Spears begins a second week at #1 with 'Circus', very narrowly edging off Taylor Swift who moves up to a new peak of #2. The performance of "Love Story" has far exceeded that of "Teardrops On My Guitar", which peaked at #9. The top 5 is completely bulleted and strong this week. Kings Of Leon, inch up to #3 with "Use Somebody", matching the 2008 peak of "Sex On Fire" and will more than likely surpass it. Leona Lewis may get lost in this extremely tight top 5 shuffle as "Run" manages to inch up to #4, but closing in on her are The Killers, who break top 5 ground yet again with "Spaceman".

Franz Ferdinand burst into the top 10 this week with a song that has finally truly clicked with me, as "Ulysses" becomes only their second top hit after "Do Ya Wanna?" peaked at #7. Also continuing to move at a brisk pace is Lily Allen, MGMT, and newer Beyonce.

Another big week in the debut department as so many songs are waiting to make it on. Leading the way is a song I heard at least, a good 6 months ago. It is finally getting it's due as Santogold makes an appearance with "L.E.S. Artistes". Next up is hit-making melodic rock band, Third Eye Blind, who I hope can strike gold with the infectious "Non Dairy Creamer". Last debut I'm also a bit late on, as well as their terrific new album, as T.V. On The Radio comes on board. They struck a surprising #5 peak in 2006 with their amazing "Wolf Like Me" - so who knows how far "Golden Age" could go.

The composition of the top 5 remains unchanged from last week, but it is far from static. This is probably the strongest the top 5 has ever been, with each song a potential #1 but getting the bridesmaids positions due to stronger than usual competition for the top. Who emerges? Britney Spears secures a third week at the top with her smash, "Circus". And just barely at that, as The Killers move up 3 spots to #2 with "Spaceman". That means everyone else, Taylor Swift, Kings Of Leon, and Leona Lewis all get shoved down one spot. That does not mean you can count them out. Particularly Ms. Swift and the Followill boys of Kings of Leon.

Franz Ferdinand, MGMT, and Lady GaGa appear to be the next big threats that could potentially shake up that sturdy top 5. Also looking strong is a barrage of songs still in the bottom half, including Jay Z/Santogold, solo Santogold, The Fray, and T.V. On The Radio.

Another three debuts this week! The chart is beginning to get congested. Lead honors go to the terrific The Gaslight Anthem, a rock band out of Jersey who scored great reviews for their sophmore disc, The 59's Sound. Their sound clearly pays homage to Bruce Springsteen, who just so happens to be the second debut this week with his terrific "Working On A Dream". And last but not least, a band who are looking for some redemption as Snow Patrol debut with "Crack The Shutters". This is a song a lot more like "Chasing Cars", and a lot less like their dud "Take Back The City" which peaked at a miserable #21 in 2008.

The composition of the top 5 remains unchanged yet again this week, but just like week, things are far from static. With anticipation growing for their sold out concert tonight in Toronto, The Killers scoot up to #1 with the terrific "Spaceman", ending the 3-week reign of "Circus" from Britney Spears. The Killers are no stranger to raining in on Britney's parade, as "Human" interrupted the run of "Womanizer" at #1 back in 2008. This is The Killers 8th #1 on the chart. Taylor Swift is the first of the big 5 to lose her bullet as she slides down to #5, after securing a solid #2 peak. Leona Lewis surges to a new peak at #3, while Kings Of Leon get cozy at #4, waiting for that moment to breakthrough with the outstanding "Use Somebody".

With Taylor on her way out, that leaves room for a new face in the top 5 next week. Franz Ferdinand looks to fill the void as "Ulysses" is sure to become their first ever top 5 hit. Other faces in the top 10 like Lady GaGa and newcomer MGMT, may have to wait a few more weeks before an attempt to crack the top 5 is feesable.

After weeks and weeks of 3 debuts storming the chart, this week we settle for a solid pair of new entries. The first is from Kelly Clarkson with her terrific return to form, "My Life Would Suck Without You". "Never Again" managed to muster a #4 peak, which is tame when you compare it to the 4 #1's she had off "Breakaway" and the two she scored off "Thankful". Will this one return her to the top? And last but definitely not least, we have The Airborne Toxic Event, a song I've been playing for months but was never able to breakthrough. Now, it's top 10 on Alternative and they just had an outstanding, and I mean that, performance on David Letterman that finally gave them the push they needed. "Sometime Around Midnight" is something to catch if you haven't yet.
