On Wednesday evening, Slant Magazine published the first review of Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett's new jazz album "Cheek to Cheek." The review was negative, just like several other reviews that followed it. Lady Gaga's fans became enraged and threatened the writer in the Comments section of the article.
We have been fans of Lady Gaga for a long time. No matter how quirky her act is, the Lady has talent. Her ARTRAVE concert tour received some unnecessary bad reviews, even though it was one of the best shows we have seen in a while. The same goes for "ARTPOP," a poorly reviewed album that was actually very good.
We wish we could say that "Cheek to Cheek" is underrated. After all, Tony Bennett is in the same league as Frank Sinatra and even if Gaga's star has dimmed recently, she is (by far) the most successful pop music act over the past five years. You would think they would bring sparks when singing together. Unfortunately, the two show very little chemistry.
"Cheek to Cheek" sounds more like a marketing gimmick than a real jazz album. It's obvious that (at least after the disappointment of ARTPOP) Lady Gaga and her marketing team thought the album would be a good idea. Unfortunately, especially on songs like "Anything Goes" and the title track, Gaga's voice sounds strained. She is trying way too hard to be taken seriously as a jazz singer.
Then, there is Tony Bennett. God bless this man for still having a career in his eighties. However, he sounds out of breath and lazy in most of the songs. He sounds like he is on auto-pilot and can't wait to get out of the studio. This is especially evident when he duets with Gaga on "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." Behind the scenes, you can just imagine him screaming, "Get me out of here!"
Little Monsters may be upset at the failure of "Cheek to Cheek." However, the good news is that Mother Monster will be forced to concentrate on what she does best: making catchy pop songs. Instead of trying to push this dud, Lady Gaga should get back to the studio and, once again, surprise everybody.
