No, you're not understanding. She's actually been called The New People's Princess. It was a name given to her by the tabloids, but somehow it's stuck.

It's too simple to call her an airhead (even though she is one) - that's not why she's popular. This is what I mean by cultural importance (which someone like Taylor, based on how this country is formed, does not have.)

Britain is a class based country. (For centuries, the U.S. has been a race based country, but is definitely turning into our former motherland). The class system is RIGID. Not as enforced as the caste system, but very rigid. In the past thirty years, there have only been two types of people in the UK who were definitively lower class, but managed to rise above it - pop stars and sports (mainly soccer/football) players.

Cheryl combines both. You see, she is a chav. It's used as an insult against her, but that's what she is. She came from the council estates, for goodness sakes. (Council estates are the British form of projects - quick, name me one non-rapper American pop star who's from the projects.) This - her whole career - was not supposed to happen to her. Not to people like her.

She beat the odds. People have seen her rise from the beginning. Not to sound hagiographic, but this is why she is beloved. She is seen as a role model for every working class person - that where you're from doesn't define who you are. In that respect - found it! She would be analogous to Sarah Palin.

But - she's also a scorned woman. People (for some reason) really admired her for sticking by her husband - that's when her fame grew, and that's when she got the X-Factor gig. But he kept cheating. And she kept crying pretty tears.

This "Drummer Flop" it seems like an epically bad song. But it can sing much better than Cheryl and Ciara. It has personality.

As I was saying - imagine combining the narratives of a Taylor Swift (sweet, nice girl that you want to take home to mom) with a Sarah Palin (rose from nothing, the opposite of the 'elite') and you begin to understand her appeal, and why she is compared to Princess Diana.

You remember how big the cheating scandal was with Tiger Woods? Imagine if his wife had been legitimately famous on her own. (Which Cheryl always was - unlike true WAGS, Cheryl was always more successful and more famous than her husband.)

GOT IT. Like Sandra Bullock! There's an analogy that makes sense.

I don't know if the U.S. would ever have a pop star with an origin story that's comparable to hers; our particular infrastructure would not allow it.

I had a vague idea of all of that but I didn't know quite how poor she was. I thought she may have had stage parents or something who pushed her into the show all those years ago.
