Remember, Kanye West himself said that Rihanna heard "FourFiveSeconds" from his album and wanted and begged him to give it to her (for her album, lol). So, yes, Rihanna is in some "control" over the sound and direction of her album, but the sounds are far from being her own (but everyone knows that, at this point).

That's her bread n butter. She doesn't have a loyal fanbase like Madonna, Britney, Gaga, Taylor, or Beyonce.
And increasingly, Katy. She's one of the few popstars who's only as good as her last hit.
Either that or her loyal fanbase is too cheap (read: poor) and don't buy her music. Her first weeks sales are inexcusable for a popstar of her caliber.
Either way, she needs constant radio exposure to maintain steady sales.
