Small country, lots of countries that want us gone = everyone has to serve [there are, of course, exceptions, but that's the basic law]. Everyone has to serve their "duty service", which is 3 years for boys and 2 for girls. Most of the soldiers aren't combat soldiers though, and the army has many programs where it basically gives you college education that it, of course, uses for its own needs later on. Some of the Israeli released soldiers, those who served in the top quality unites, usually already has their first degree when they're done with the army.

No... Didn't serve....
Brazil...
In some countries people are obliged
Some countries there's a real democracy (like the US and the UK)
Some countries both men and women have to...
In Brazil, it's, in theory, obligatory, cause when you show to the military group, they ask you if you want to serve or not, usually they pick people who say they want, but some unlucky people will get drafted (no racism from me, but at least in Rio, almost every black guy is...)

Well, Israel is a democracy, and since it's so little and surrounded by so many countries that have declared about their will of wiping Israel off of the map, there's a real need that every person will give 2 or 3 years for the safety of his country. The law that obligates an Israeli citizen to serve in the army is a law that is supported by the majority of the Israeli citizens. You have rights and obligation as a citizen - in Israel, one of these obligations is to serve in the army. If you really don't fit this structure, you can bail out.

What I meant about a real democracy is letting the guys (and the girls in some countries) decide whether they want or not to serve, not simply obliging them...

I got that. In some countries, like Israel, the reality is different and requires such laws. Plus, in Israel's case, this law is supported by a rave majority, what makes it even more legitimate. If you really don't want to serve, you won't.
I don't know the reality n Brazil, but I do know that the reality in Israel requires such an obligation and that's also the reasons why most Israeli respect and support this law.

Yeah, in some countries is about the safety of your homeland, so I understand why Israel forces people to go, but I really feel for you guys. Thank God it's not like that here in Brazil.

No need too, I am glad to do my part Plus, as I stated before, if someone really doesn't want to serve - he will find his way out.

Military was never really a big deal in Brazil...
People would think our Latin neighbors would want to kick our asses, but for some reason, Brazil is the most respected country in Central/South America, for being the biggest economy of the American continent (excluding US and Canada) and the country with most natural resources on it (making them dependable on us), most of our neighbors are somehow dependent on Brazil resources and economy.
Military obligation is more of a formality than anything else, in fact, I'd say 95% of the guys who don't want to serve, won't serve! The situation would obviously be critic if any other country wanted to invade us, with a country bigger than Europe and with so many resources that are going to be extinct in the future (like water, oil, energy, gas), but even though the government has been warned about it, they don't seem to give a real care to it specially with all the friendship we've been having with the U.S.A. since World War 2...
In fact, Brazil's military is very conservative, their rules haven't changed since 1964, and some of they regarding the entrance of recruits exclude: People who have had any kind of surgery, People with tattoos, Gays and similarities, People who admit to the military junction they have used illicit drugs in the past, People who are/were admitted to college/university, People who sustain their family, Guys with no brothers or sisters and the list goes on, for these and other reasons it is often joked about...
Most of the military are made of people with little basic education, making it strategically irrelevant...
The higher positions of brazilian military are achieved via tests....
I'm not sure how Brazil could or would react to a possible threats, but our policies are overall very pacifist!
