Asylum remains the best, no question. It's so far beyond the other three, it's not even funny.
The character development, the plot line, everything. It had a few missteps (let's be real, it IS AHS and Ryan Murphy), but no other season is even close to being as cohesive a body of work as Asylum

Speaking of which, I wish they didn't bother with the aliens or with the flashbacks in the earlier episodes.
The aliens really distracted from the Nazi, religious and survival themes. It was rather jarring whenever the aliens came up, especially when they were used only as plot devices or to excuse occurrences of deus ex machina (
Alma and Grace being revived
,
Jude becoming suddenly sane after going on a walk with the kids
,
Kit's ending
, etc.). I understand that Ryan wants the show to remain
American Horror Story and not
Intergalactic Horror Story, but introducing a subplot completely unlike the rest of the concepts in your show and not exploring it is bound to end in failure.
As for the flashbacks, the killing of the tourists and imitators was unnecessary and consistently interrupted the flow of the earlier episodes. I think they should have started the modern-day flashbacks about halfway through where they fit in more with the plot, and done all of the Adam Levine part in one 10-15 minute block.
But yes,
Asylum is definitely the best season.
