I always wondered if they ask the artists if they can cover the songs on these TV shows. They could get sued by some artists (like Prince who HATES being covered, his label makes everyone deleted their covers on Instagram, Vine, Youtube, etc)

These shows can't use any song they like, they do need permission. X Factor has a limited catalogue of songs they have permission to use, hence why we get so many of the same songs being sung every year.

I may be wrong but I am pretty sure Madonna doesn't allow X Factor to use her songs, its the only reason I can think as to why they have never done a 'Madonna' theme, like they have done with so many other singers.

Both Bruno x Mark have credits for production & lyrics Bruno also sings it... So they really OWN this track that's why I was surprised to see it being performed before the release

would not be sure about that, sony are the ones who distribute those xfactor covers and Simon is a sony music partner, mark aswell is under that label aswell

I think that will bring a lot of attention to the song. I hope this makes the original version shoot to the top because it's the better version anyway.

I think Mark and Bruno may have allowed it. Sony must have pressured them idk. I am sure they have control over this and could prevent Xfactor from using the song if they wanted.

What article, if its the Lily Allen article then I don't get people's problem.

She is basically saying its unfair how that song is receiving so much promo on such a huge platform before its even released, where many other songs struggle basically for platforms and radio play. She doesn't like that Sony managed to get the song on the show and get it heard by so many people so easily, she is not actually implying its bad for Mark and Bruno, the opposite infact. Unless I am completely misunderstanding it, to me it seems like bitterness because she is starting to struggle.

The show was given permission to use it and Mark and Bruno will both earn money from the cover, everything was OK'd and signed off, I don't get what this 'controversy' is.

No, it's not the Lily article. I was talking about articles like the BBC one someone linked in the last page showing how these covers don't bring much benefit to the original performers of the song. Of course they will have their writing/producing royalties, but they won't get that much with the sales of the cover version.
Obviously it's up to Mark and Bruno to decide what to do. I think they didn't imagine the cover would be so successful like this.
