I think it's kinda hard to be avant-garde with pop music, which basic means whatever music is popular at the time. It's not really a genre because it doesn't really have a specific sound. It's simply an artist putting out music they think will appeal to the main target, which is youth.
#2 on Billboard.
Pop music can be different, and I deeply believe in that.
DID SHE LIE? She started the trend and now everyone is following suit. Only the Queen and the gorls can't take the truth. You know your the Queen of Pop when u get ppl riled up over true teas, gorl gaga has ppl MAD.
"It's becoming trendy now - and it's my fault - or cool, to be avant-garde. Or be daring in everything you do. I'm speaking specifically about pop music here."
I agree with that part. She revived the avant-garde fashion and music videos to the mainstream pop audience since it is her main marketing strategy, especially in the US. However, she wasnt the one who reintroduced it to the market. Rihanna, Beyoncé & Ciara did. "Disturbia", "Go Girl" videos deserve more artistic respect, they were innovative. Beyoncé for example was wearing avant-garde clothing by Gareth Pugh in 2008 for her MTV EMA performance and in "Diva" because it was hot and new. She wore him again in "Run The World". They started working with Thierry Mugler early in 2008, and he is very avant-garde and futuristic. But that avant-garde image happened to be the image that worked for Gaga, so she capitalized it to the extreme while the other ladies where experimenting it only. She influenced mainstream artists to not be afraid to take more risks generally, I give her that. But I don't believe that she made anything trendy. Fashion brings the trends, not Gaga. Artists follow the evolution of fashion and wear what's hot & new. This is why they were all rocking for example shoulder pads [Beyoncé's leotard in ''Single Ladies" for example] or geometric forms, it was a fashion trend. The only one I can see who tries hard to have a similar image as Gaga is Nicki Minaj. Musically speaking, she isn't avant-garde. If we really want to go to the roots, we don't have to go that far. Kelis by far beats artistically & creatively all of them, she is so avant-garde that it has never helped her rising as mainstream. She is true to herself and this is not an image, this is who she is. Her music, her fashion. Gwen Stefani was a prime example of avant-garde. Kylie Minogue had her moments. Beyond pop, Missy Elliott & Busta Rhymes were extremely avant-garde in Hip-Hop. The Neptunes musically, Destiny's Child's "The Writings On The Wall" & "Survivor" albums had some avant-garde in them. Even "Umbrella" was very innovative and it's not that far away. I can talk about TLC's "No Scrubs" video, some MJ videos, Bjork, Patti Labelle & Labelle, Cindi Lauper, Madonna and of course, the iconic Grace Jones. They were original and being themselves and deserve credits.

I dont know if she really means "avant-garde" but I think I get what she's saying. After she announced the title of the album, pop artists started embracing being "freaks" or "unique." We R Who We R, Firework, and Raise Your Glass/****in Perfect come to mind.
I believe that she said something to that effect during a concert once (not specifically calling out the other girls). Regardless, her biggest impact on music has been her videos. She can be solely credited for bringing back a dying art form. Do you guys remember how boring music videos were getting before GaGa hit the scene? Now everyone is bringing their A games. I love it
The lyrics in Born The Way are very literal, very Avant-garde, it goes against the mainstream type music. You have very metaphorical driven "acceptance anthems". Born This Way breaks aways from the metaphorical driven anthems. She is basically telling you, take a seat, get a bowl, serve yourself cereal and eat it. As apposed to using some metaphor on how to do all of that. Get it?
She is addressing problems in todays society on mainstream radio. I don't need to quote lyric after lyric for you to see this do I? "Transgender" "Gay, Bi, or lesbian life"
#2 on Billboard.

Well yeah. But with pop you can't really be different because it's just whatever is popular. With rock, you have certain elements that make it a rock song, same with reggae, dance, R&B, etc. But with pop, it can be any genre as long as it appeals to the majority of people.

Sis, even if you think the LYRICS are avant-garde. you have to admit that SONICALLY it isn't. which is what matters most in pop music.
