December 12th - December 18th, 2008
I'm back from my two-week stint in Barcelona. It was a phenomenal trip. Once I go through and organize over the 1,000 pictures I have, I'll be sure to post some highlights of the beautiful city
Since the chart was frozen last week, each track gets an extra week added to it's "weeks on" tally this week. Also a result of the hiatus, we see some major movement, huge uncharacteristic drops, and four debuts (one of which breaks a record!)
In the interim week (last week's frozen chart),
The Killers would have not been #1, but
Kanye West would have been with
Love Lockdown. Thus,
Human ends its reign at the top after 5 solid weeks. But this week, Kanye dethrones himself as
Heartless eases into the pole position. Kanye West is only the second artist to not only replace himself at #1 on the chart, but to also occupy the top 2 positions on the chart since Coldplay did it earlier this year with "Violet Hill" and "Viva La Vida". LL and Heartless represent the 2nd and 3rd #1 singles for Kanye this year on the chart, following the 1-week reign of "Homecoming" earlier this year (which also featured Chris Martin of Coldplay), not to mention the #2 peak of "Flashing Lights".
Rihanna,
Paramore,
Incubus, and
Taylor Swift make use of the vacuum effect in the top 10 and rise anywhere from 3 to 8 spots this week. Debuting just outside the top 10 is
Britney Spears, who beats her own record for biggest chart debut of 2008 at #11 with
Circus ("Womanizer" debuted at #17 in September). Let me tell you, "Circus" (the single and album) were all the rage in Barcelona, and took up substantial club airplay time. It gets people in the dancing and partying mood. Can't deny a catchy pop tune.
Other beneficiaries of the chart hiatus last week?
Leona Lewis,
Beyonce, and
10 Years all rise anywhere from 7-9 spots this week. Who didn't benefit?
Nickelback,
Christina Aguilera,
Katy Perry,
Ne Yo and
Kings Of Leon, who all drop anywhere from 7-14 spots this week.
Our last 3 debuts this week are also notable.
The Killers charge in at #23 (matching the debut of "Human"), with
Spaceman from their critically acclaimed but fan-confused album, "Day and Age".
Oasis will try to re-capture the #1 glory of "The Shock Of The Lightning" with their latest, while
John Legend debuts, trying to best the modest success of "P.D.A." last year.
It's a very uncharacteristic chart this week. Lots to take note of, and not to be confused. So enjoy it.
