Hmm...as far as RPGs are concerned, there's the Elder Scrolls games, particularly Oblivion and Skyrim. Those games are EXTREMELY time consuming, though. There's also Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, which are Shooter/RPG hybirds...uh, they released a FF game, Final Fantasy XIII, on the console...and there's also Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2, among many others.
As for shooters? There's just so many. If you've been clueless since 2007, then there's always one of the games in the Modern Warfare series, particularly the first one, which revolutionized the shooter in many ways. There's also the Resistance and Killzone series, and there's so many more. Oh, and Bioshock!...which isn't a shooter, really, but it's also fantastic.
And then, there's other games like LittleBigPlanet/LittleBigPlanet 2, Heavy Rain, God of War III, Infamous, the list goes on and on and on.

The first game is a classic, but the second one's slightly better. The third? Eh, it's good, but not as good as the first two, IMO.

FPS(First Person Shooter)
Hmmm, for the PS3 you have 2 big 1st party franchises(from the top of my head). KillZone and Resistance. They are fun and GORGEOUS to look at. Killzone(2), not that deep of a story and maybe comes off as "try hard" but it has very good mechanics. and is very enjoyable. Resistance is all the alien blood and gore you might be craving! Very fun, with a HUGE list of guns at your disposal, both of these franchises have huge online dedicated fanbase, if you're planning on playing it online. You also have other options, such as COD etc.
RPG:
Nothing really that stands out for the most part, I will update you as soon as I can remember.
Hope this helps,
Games a recommend,
FPS: Killzone 2&3
FPS/Action/Adventure Rage(NEW, multi platform)
Adventure/Platforming Uncharted(1, 2 and 3) AMAZING game.
FPS: Resistance, give the whole series a try.
FPS/Stealth Metal Gear Solid 4
Action Infamous 1&2
Action God of War 3
I'll list more if you're in need of more

Remembered!
RPGS:
Dark souls is a brand new game that has been getting allot of buzz lately and has incredibly high scores across the board, with a high score on Metacritic that puts it at 89. I havent had the chance to play it but I hear very good things, I will most likely play it by the end of the month.
The lack of JRPGs this gen really sucks, not enough on this genre.
You can stick with the more western RPGs ala Fallout and Oblivion.
I would recommend to give these games a try, Valkyria Chronicles and Eternal Sonata!!!!!! The latter is a must try, it cheap and beautiful!!!!!

One important thing to remember with Dark Souls (as well as Demon's Souls): It is EXTREMELY hard, perhaps the hardest and most brutal game of this generation of games. It's ultra-rewarding if you beat it, of course, but you have to have the patience to put up with dying a *lot*.

Yes I agree with Demon Soul, I had a tough time but it was all worth it... I play all my games on the hardest setting. Its just more fun that way, but as you said, they are really hard. If you're easily annoyed and don't like the challenge, don't pick it up.

Thanks everyone!
The Uncharted series seems like a good place to start.
Also, I'm interested in FF13 but I've heard such negative things about it. Is it worth it?

I might be the only one, but it really is good. It's almost the best Final Fantasy game-play-wise, but I think that still belongs to either XII. BTW, I also wanted to join the Uncharted train.

FFXIII *****. The story is engaging and the gameplay is tight. Those graphics... insane.

Yeah, cause you played the game already.
And meh, most haters hated the game for the linearity and the inability to explore the world and towns of the game. This is not the case for this game so you know what to do with your trap, gurl.
You should also know that FFXIII-2 could be likened to
Chrono Trigger because of Historia Crux system allowing you to time travel and the game allows you to catch monsters as your battle pets
and that's making it so awesome that I bet you wish you didn't judge the game based on what y'all haters say in IGNorant.

Infamous 1 or 2 or the stand-alone DLC, Festival of Blood, Dead Nation, Uncharted, Demon Souls, Little Big Planet, Modnation Racers, Sports Champion(Kinda like Wii Sports but you need the move peripheral), Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crank In Time, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, FLOWER(It's a PSN game but highly recommended!!!), Heavenly Sword, Valkyria Chronicles, Ico and Shadow of Colossus HD, Heavy Rai n, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 1 or 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 or 2 and many to mention, tbh!
