Appreciate Illmatic for the lyricism but it's not for me.
Tango in the night and What's the story are amazing.
Post is fantastic as well but I only voted for only one album per artist and I gave it to Homogenic.

This list is beginning to look so rock dominated. I hope my old school soul and R&B faves can still push through. Hopefully...

Björk. A classic.
Happy to see Dolly getting some love.
God, that Shania Twain album is trash. Offensively bland.

Morning Glory, Post and Tango In The Night are all flawless records, but as I decided to put just one album per artist they were left out of my list

65. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)
Points: 216
Submitters: Wicked, DevonDreams, KingKunta, lik2throw
Hardcore, East Coast Hip Hop, Boom Bap
|
Quote:
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is the debut studio album by the American hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan, released November 9, 1993, on Loud Records and distributed through RCA Records.
The distinctive sound of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) created a blueprint for hardcore hip hop during the 1990s and helped return New York City hip hop to national prominence. Its sound also became greatly influential in modern hip hop production, while the group members' explicit, humorous, and free-associative lyrics have served as a template for many subsequent hip hop records.

Wicked's Wisdom
There'd be no Kanye West without this. Or Nas, Biggie, Jay Z & a lot more artists. Nearly single handily responsible for the complete 180 transformation of 90s East Coast Hip Hop. This juggernaut restored ECHH after G-Funk took over. One of the best produced & put together records of all time. RZA is a genius. Who else was using not only Soul samples but film samples and making the best beats ever? Da Mystery of Chessboxin' is better than your favorite song. Ghostface Killah + The Chef > Life. Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F' Wit! |
64. D'Angelo - Brown Sugar (1995)
Points: 226
Submitters: Playa Playa, Mr.Fenty, Subomie, Reverie
Neo-Soul
Smooth Soul, Contemporary R&B |
Quote:
Brown Sugar is the debut album of American recording artist D'Angelo, released on July 4, 1995, by EMI Music.
Brown Sugar contains themes of love and romance, and features a fusion of contemporary R&B and traditional soul music, along with elements of funk, quiet storm, and hip hop music. D'Angelo's commercial breakthrough with Brown Sugar has been credited by writers and music critics for providing commercial visibility to the emerging neo soul movement of the mid-1990s, as well as inspiration behind the coinage of the term neo soul. Yahoo! Music's Jeff Watson wrote that the album "single-handedly revitalized the creatively-dormant R&B scene".

63. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988)
Points: 233
Submitters: KingKunta, Kid A, Gangsta4alife, Mr. Fahrenheit
Political, East Coast, Hardcore Hip Hop
Turntablism, Conscious |
Quote:
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is the second studio album by American hip hop group Public Enemy, released on June 28, 1988, by Def Jam Recordings.
Public Enemy set out to make the hip hop equivalent to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, an album noted for its strong social commentary. Since its initial reception, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back has been regarded by music writers and publications as one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 48 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, the highest ranking of all the hip hop albums on the list, and the only one acknowledged in the top hundred.

62. David Bowie - Low (1977)
Points: 234
Submitters: AlexisNeiers, Mr. Fahrenheit, Kxvk
Art Rock, Experimental Rock
Ambient, Electronic, Art Pop |
Quote:
Low is the eleventh studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on RCA Records in January 1977.
Recorded following Bowie's move to West Berlin after a period of drug addiction and personal instability, Low became the first of three collaborations with musician Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti later termed the "Berlin Trilogy". Though it was initially met with mixed critical reviews, Low has since become widely acclaimed as one of Bowie's best and most influential works. Pitchfork placed it at number 1 in its list of the Top 100 Albums of the 1970s, while Q placed it at number 14 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2013, NME listed the album as the 14th greatest of all time.

61. New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies (1983)
Points: 240
Submitters: Playa Playa, 6 Apple St., Gahan, Kxvk
Synthpop, Post-Punk, New Wave
Alternative Dance |
Quote:
Power, Corruption & Lies is the second studio album by the English rock band New Order, released in May 1983 on Factory Records.
A great leap forward from their funereal debut album, Power, Corruption & Lies cemented New Order's place as the most exciting dance-rock hybrid in music (and it didn't even include the massive "Blue Monday" single, released earlier that year). Confident and invigorating where Movement had sounded disconsolate and lost, the record simply pops with energy from the beginning. It was included in the top 100 albums of the 1980s lists in both Rolling Stone and Pitchfork Media.

Brown Sugar So amazing what it did for R&B and it introduced to this great D'Angelo.
Power, Corruption & Lies is one of my favourite dance albums too. I love it so much.
And Wu-Tang, Bowie, PE are the greats too. This is the best "batch" of albums so far!

Oh **** the collapse is broken.
This is what Wicked said about the classic "36 Chambers"

none made my list but think 80% were definitely maybes
I don't quite enjoy 36 on a surface level as much as some some solo Wu joints but it's just s0o0o0o0 important, like nothing else that came before
Low was what turned me on to DB, still just don't care about that ambient stuff coming from him but that first side is ****ing mind-blowing
And Brown Sugar the smoothest **** ever put to tape
