Despite being number one for one week on the UK Singles Chart, "If I Were a Boy" spent 5 non-consecutive weeks at the number one position on the UK R&B Chart, until January 18, 2009, it was beaten for the number one spot by Knowles' own single, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". In the song's 10th chart week, sales exceeded 400,000 copies; the song is Knowles' first Gold single in the UK, her highest selling solo single and the 68th biggest selling single of the last decade.

Japan is only 1 of 3 markets in the world that can pull a million record sales. Non-Japanese artists rarely sell millions in Japan. Mariah has sold a cumulative 15 million singles and albums in Japan, the most for a non-Japanese artist.
