CH. .She's BEEN rising since 2005. . .Or do you Not realize that 2009 is 4 years after her debut??
I'm so tired of folks acting as if ONE era affects somebody's entire career. Using the Britney example, People can easily say she lost her spark considering Blackout. .And theres Some that are even saying that about her NOW in general [Cue Gaga stans].
"In order to be successful an artist must have their own fanbase"
So 1 million copies in the US =/= Successful?
Really now, Gorl??
You tried but Trey Songz and Lil Wayne say no.

Rihanna didn't become a star until her third album, she had one hit single from her first album and two from her second. Absolutely nothing to be proud about. GGGB was the album that really established her, it propelled her forward and she finally began having success to match the hype that surrounded her. The reality is that Rihanna has only had one truly successful era.

I find it funny that people in the WTC thread said that the video is so "Ke$ha / Katy Perry", that it doesn't fit her, and that she should stick to herself, be more "Rihanna"...
And now when Rihanna basically said what they said but in other words (And made it sound like a diss although in the rest of the interview Rihanna talked about how good Katy Perry and that they are good friends.)

Catchy song. Looks like a Katy Perry video. I prefer Rihanna a little darker.

It's like Katy Perry, Ke$ha, and Nicki Minaj were all rolled into one person and autotuned to the T-Pain level.
The song is catchy, the video is cute and colorful. Reminds me of Eve's vid for "Tambourine." However, I'm not getting any Rihanna out of this.

It was her 3rd single following 2 singles that barely did anything. It was a success. Dont discredit it.

Rated R was pretty much a flop era. As you just said yourself.
For her standard she set with GGGB it was a major let down. Her first two albums did not do well, to the extent that she carried on her only 2 successful songs to the next album in a bid to get people to buy it, how many artists actually do that?
She is talented but so far she has only had ONE majorally successful era out of 4 that is not an impressive record no matter how many top songs she has had, notice how many were from GGGB then notice how many were just her as a featured artist. Let's see how Loud does before we judge her for good though.

The fact that it was the third single was irrelevant. Third singles don't normally tend to sell as well as the first two because normally people purchase the song when they buy the album, but it's not like Rated R was flying off the shelves so she has no excuse. The third single rule does not apply in this case.

You just said yourself Rude Boy was 'successful' after her first 2 singles did nothing, much like Te Amo did. You can't possibly think that one successful single makes a successful album
Rated R grew on me, but it was an undeniable let-down sales wise.

The song was #1 for 5 weeks and has barely sold over 2 million downloads
I see the public lost interest very quickly....

dont worry about how the song sells you should be concerned for your fave to have a song to last that long at #1. That is the only thing that matters

If true, then is she smoking crack? Their music isn't generic. Rihanna, along with those three ladies, are leading the pack of the dance pop movement. Granted it may not be extremely original or lyrically amazing, but it certainly isn't generic.

Actually album sales are more important.
And sold out tours.
And critical acclaim.
Some of the greatest songs of all time haven't been #1 and some of the worst have

Mariah Carey has a huge fanbase, but she can barely even get a hit single these days.
No shade meant at these amazing ladies. My point is: pop music fans can be extremely capricious; every artist struggles when their project is not marketed correctly.
Rihanna's incredible album "Rated R" was not give a proper chance to be a hit. I am convinced with singles like "Fire Bomb," "Stupid in Love," "Cold Case Love" or "The Last Song," audiences would have been exposed to the album's heart and soul, as well as its artistic merit. As it was presented, the era was schizophrenic and misrepresentative. (And yet the album is about to sell 1 million copies, so imagine how huge it could have been.)
|
First B'Day wasn't flopping or did B'Day FLOP the album sold over 4- 5 million worldwide around Dec. when Irreplaceable was released also B'Day The album debuted at number #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 541,000 copies in its first week the BIGGEST first week sales for a female Artist in 2006. And went on to sale over 6 million copies, Yes "Irreplaceable" was the biggest success from the album followed by "Beautiful Lair" & "Déjà Vu"
B'Day certified triple platinum in sales by the RIAA. So your Logic has failed
