Slow, dramatic synth-pop that moves from loud banging drums (Underwater) to more mellow reverby synths (Chimera). I like this chick, thanks Grimes for making me give her another chance. Vocals kinda give me iamamiawhoami/Zola Jesus but less Siouxsie Sioux isms.
09. Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered.
Kendrick released his own version of Side B too! More of a concept than just b-sides though but it's nice we got a little rough around the edges version of TPAB.
08. Dagny - Ultraviolet
Catchy effortless indie pop-rock in the vein of HAIM and sorta Taylor Swift (pop ver.). No frills, just four extremely catchy pop tracks with amazing choruses and a Børns collaboration.
07. Wednesday Campanella - Superkid
Wednesday Campanella continues her streak of quality releases with a tringle/single/EP whatever you wanna call it. It has the song Aladdin which was on my songs list but the other two tend to be a bit more experimental in song structure and weirder sonically. But if you like any of her songs released this year you'll like this. For some reason Spotify only has two tracks but there are 3 definitely.
06. HyunA - A'wesome
Hyuna's best release in my opinion, because instead of the bops + ballads formula she's been going for she really gives us a lot. Trashy sIut anthems, of course, romantic mid-tempos, and also a whispery synthy trendy song.
You're the only person I've seen to keep Lipslap as their KKB fave, reminds me I should probably listen to the other half of their album one day.
Someone Like U is cute, but 10 Seconds is gorgeous. Definitely a deserved #1.
Good Luck is probably my second fave mini album of the year (behind IJWD). A'wesome might be my least fave of Hyuna's releases though, there's kinda not a single track on it I like
Ariana Grande meets Carly Rae Jepsen in Kpops most solid mini of the year. The tempos are slowed down for this. It pretty much beat almost every single Kpop act to the punch and sounds better for it.
04. Famm'in - Circle
3 different Jpop groups (FAKY, Yup'in who idk, FEMM) make a collaborative EP. It's mostly English though, surprisingly. I'm really not sure what this was for because I don't really get the target audience but uhm it bops. Amazing instrumentals, bops, and Beyonce references.
03. ABRA - princess
As said in my Crybaby writeup it's sort of a genius combo of styles/sounds. It works for a whole EP and she kills it vocally on all tracks. Her ad libs
02. Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion: Side B
Carly released an EP of b sides from her AOTY last year and it still snatched all of us! Some of the songs obviously wouldn't have fit on the EP (Store, First Time) while some (Higher, Fever) would have been better than a couple bonus tracks. Basically Carly's voice is the most perfect voice for Pop music since Minnie Mouse-donna.
01. Charli XCX - Vroom Vroom
3 years of "PC Music" "Bubblegum Bass" and all that crap have basically led up to this release. This is the culmination of that sound and it will never sound as good. You have four songs with absolutely no flaws, all offer something different, and all INNOVATIVE.
