I wouldn't call that a bad message for girls.

The main message of the book is that Bella chooses death over life, not for herself but because of a boy. She is probably the worst female character in recent history because she defines her sense of worth entirely by a boy and his whims. She doesn't care about anything
but Edward, she doesn't care about her parents who love her, she doesn't care about her friends, she doesn't care about her family, she doesn't care about her own life, her own education, her own sense of self, she doesn't care about her humanity, etc. The film Eclipse shows this painfully when Bella decides that she is going to fake her death just so she can run off to **** Edward for eternity and it's despicable. She doesn't even understand the gravity of the situation, I don't see how someone could willingly tell a parent their child is dead and make them go threw inconceivable grief just because you want to be with your boyfriend. Their aren't' even words for that kind of intolerable cruelty.
She is a horrible character and the entire series is just painfully irresponsible. The message is abhorrent to young girls who this series is aimed after. It's okay that a man abuses you (physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually) as long as he says he loves you. Meyer's main argument is that a woman should have no desires outside of pleasing her controlling, abusive husband. That is what Twilight is about - how horrible it would be for a woman to be single.

The only hit film she was attached to prior to Twilight was, Panic Room which was purely a Jodi Foster vehicle. I wouldn't call that "going big places."
