That was motivation enough; you don't need a witch to explain colonist ghosts defending land they originally claimed as their own.

But you do need a way of explaining why the land became cursed like that. A group of colonists dying hardly warrants the ghosts sticking around forever. The witch brings that idea of there being a supernatural power who could use the ghosts of the dead to defend the land by sacrificing the living for their blood

a plot-hole would be something like cordelia becoming the supreme when she can't get pregnant or was blind/had a bad sight anyway and the supreme needs to be healthy. that's a plot hole. not unexplained storys.

only thing annoying me is: who cut Return To Roanoke knowing that people are actually dying on there? And who aired it? Just impossible.
Also, why is everyone like "Yeah I don't believe in ghost stories/We're here to find out if the butcher is fabricated or not " when there is footage of them killing? Like, you don't have to believe they are legit ghosts but there obviously was a threat.
