Adele and Gotye proved the pop charts are safe for songs far removed from the past few years' hedonistic dance-pop, but it's been a long wait for someone else to follow their lead successfully. For a second it looked like Ke$ha might conclusively break the mold, what with her talk about "**** pop" and her über-earnest Bob Dylan cover, but then Warrior mostly regressed to the predictable, blankly celebratory post-Taio Cruz mean. Taylor Swift eagerly capitulated to prevailing EDM-pop trends, with perhaps surprisingly superlative results. That leaves Miley Cyrus: a new hope for breaking out of the pop-cultural rut responsible for LFMAO and Flo Rida?
It's not that big of a stretch. Like Ke$ha, Cyrus recorded a richly stripped-down Dylan cover this year. Also like Ke$ha, she doesn't need old-fashioned rock snobs' approval anyway: Hits such as Dr. Luke-Jessie J-Claude Kelly flash of genius "Party in the U.S.A." and motivational Hannah Montana: The Movie power ballad "The Climb" are still keepers to this day. And then there's her rebellious, Occupy Wall Street-championing image shift. Now, a video of Cyrus singing Dolly Parton's 1974 classic "Jolene" during "Backyard Sessions" this summer sharply reminds us Cyrus has the pipes — and the pedigree (forget Billy Ray; Parton is her godmother!) — to keep her U.S.A. party going strong whatever style she chooses.
It's tough to beat Parton's brilliant original, and for that matter there's also the White Stripes' yawping, gothic-tinged "Jolene" cover. While we're at it, no less than Frank Ocean faves Norah Jones and John Mayer teamed with country's Keith Urban to perform the song at 2011's Grammy Awards ceremony. Compare Cyrus' rendition with the White Stripes' and Parton's below, and start getting curious about Cyrus' upcoming album, which none other than Pharrell Williams is reportedly helping produce. Sweet life? Yessir. - Spin

Miley Cyrus Blows Us Away With Her Cover of Dolly Parton's 'Jolene'
Miley Cyrus took a moment to remind us all she's a singer, releasing the video for "Jolene." The song is a cover of Dolly Parton's 1974 hit.
The video was recorded during last summer's "Backyard Sessions," which feature the 20-year-old singer and her band playing some of her favorite songs. Fun fact: Parton is Cyrus' godmother.
These recordings have proved to be a pleasant surprise, as Cyrus has created several gorgeous acoustic covers -- including Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," James Shelton's "Lilac Wine," and Melanie Safka's "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma."
"Jolene" has us all the more curious about Cyrus' forthcoming album, which is being produced by Pharrell Williams, who has said the new record will sound unlike anything she's done before.
"Her sound right now is her personality," Williams told MTV. "That's what we've been aiming for in the studio and that's what's been coming out and that's what's been sounding so interesting. Her voice is a very powerful one -- you just have to hear it to know that and to understand it. It's nowhere near what it is that you think." - Huffington Post

Miley Cyrus Performs Stunning Cover Of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’
She may have famously spoken out against country music way back in 2010–calling it “contrived on many levels”–but that doesn’t mean Miley Cyrus can’t sing the heck out of a country tune. The godchild of Dolly Parton and daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus proves this with her latest YouTube upload, a stunning cover of Parton’s classic “Jolene” that’s already racked up more than 80,000 views in a little more than 24 hours.
Those who only know Cyrus for her pop music, acting, wedding plans–oh, and that wild haircut!–will no doubt be surprised at the rich depth and warmth the 20-year-old brings to the 1974 hit, an enduringly haunting plea from one woman to another to stay away from her man.
Cyrus chose to cover the song as part of her “Backyard Sessions” series for her official site, a little project she started over the summer when she brought her band together to perform a few of her favorite tunes. The three-video collection also includes such unusual choices as James Shelton’s 1950s tune “Lilac Wine” (which was covered by, amongst others, the late Jeff Buckley in 1994) and “Look What They’ve Done To My Song” by ’70s folk artist Melanie Safka.
Cyrus performed “Jolene” as a sparkling live duet with Parton for the 25th anniversary of Dollywood in 2010. - Yahoo

Miley Cyrus Covers "Jolene": Way To Make Dolly Proud
We are, however, pretty excited about the former Hannah Montana star’s newly released cover of her godmother Dolly Parton’s song “Jolene.”
In a YouTube clip posted Monday, Miley (with her topknot, RIP) does a beautiful rendition of the country queen’s 1973 hit.

Miley Cyrus Covers Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' For Backyard Sessions!
Who knew Miley Cyrus had this much country in her?! The 20-year-old singer released the latest video from her summer Backyard Sessions on Monday, and this time around we get to see her perform a powerful rendition of Dolly Parton's 70's hit Jolene. Fun little fact -- Dolly is also Miley's godmother! Way to do her proud, girl!
Over the summer, Miley (top knot and all) got together with her band to cover some of her favorite songs, and she's been releasing them on YouTube over the last few months. The recordings are sort of a pre-requisite to Miley's new album, which is being produced by Pharrell and set to drop early next year.
Although Miley was on the brink of her "rebellion" when her last album Can't Be Tamed hit stores in 2010, she was still considered a pop princess during that time, and has made it clear that her next album will have a much different sound than anything we've heard from her before. "A lot of the beats are produced hip-hop beats," she told Billboard in November. "But the vocal is very raw, and my voice is kind of on top of all the tracks, which is what I wanted."
In addition to new music, Miley's film So Undercover hits theaters next year, and after her success on Two and a Half Men this fall, it wouldn't be a surprise if we saw a reprise of her role again next year. PLUS -- hello! -- she's engaged so hopefully we'll start seeing some wedding plans come underway!

Miley Covers A Karaoke Classic, And We're Sort Of Okay With It
Typically, a universal cringe takes place at the R29 offices anytime one of our fave songs gets the cover treatment. But, as of late, a lot of the recent reprises have been just as catchy as the originals — Celine Dion taking on Adele's "Rolling In The Deep," Best Coast singing Stevie Nicks' classic “Rhiannon,” the list goes on and on. Maybe it's a testament to the timelessness of certain tunes, or perhaps it's just further proof that nothing in art is 100% original — either way, we're not complaining!
So, when we stumbled upon Miley Cyrus' interpretation of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," we naturally held our collective breaths. This is the girl that gave us "Party in the U.S.A." and other pop lyrics — what the hell does this Disney princess want with our precious 1974 hit? We were surprised to find that she not only managed to make us melt with that raspy chorus, but didn't butcher the ballad into oblivion. Plus, considering Parton's the 20-year-old's godmother, the vid from last summer's Backyard Sessions was actually heartwarming. - Refinery 29

Miley Cyrus sparks marriage rumors, lights up 'Jolene'
Is Miley Cyrus married?
That's the question being asked after the pop star -- who's been engaged to Australian actor Liam Hemsworth since last summer -- tweeted a photo on Christmas in which she appears to be wearing what might be a wedding band. (This is what we in the business call a slow news week, folks.)
Far more interesting than any potential nuptials, Cyrus also posted a new video to her YouTube account, the latest chapter in her ongoing "Backyard Sessions" performance series. It presents an excellent rendition of Dolly Parton's early-'70s country classic "Jolene," delivered with as much pained intensity as Cyrus brought youthful exuberance to "Party in the U.S.A." Watch it below.
Bonus fun fact gleaned from Cyrus' website: Parton is the singer's godmother. Who knew? (Not us.) - LA Times

Miley Cyrus belts out solid cover of Dolly Parton's 'Jolene'
If you're tired of Miley Cyrus stories that call attention to her hair, her outfits, her birthday parties or any other thing not related to her singing, you're in luck. Here's a story about her singing.
A new video released as part of Miley's "Backyard Sessions" from earlier this year features the singer covering Dolly Parton's "Jolene."
With her previously long brown locks in a bun atop her head, Miley sways in a long black skirt and bare feet as she's joined outdoors by her 5-piece band. "Hannah Montana" has long since transformed into a pop music star, but there's talent in that twang.
Check out Parton performing her hit nearly 40 years ago. We think Miley has done her godmother proud. Tell us if you agree and vote below. - NBC

Miley Cyrus Sings Dolly Parton Classic 'Jolene' In Incredible Cover
Who ever said Miley Cyrus isn't a talented singer? Well, if you know anyone that's ever made that claim, you now have the right to publicly shame him or her.
Miley Cyrus had uploaded a new video to YouTube that features her and an acoustic band covering the karaoke classic "Jolene," originally sung by Dolly Parton in 1974. The cover was recorded as part of the "Backyard Sessions" recorded last year that feature the 20-year-old singer singing some of her favorite songs.
While Miley Cyrus' "Backyard Sessions" feature several great covers including Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" and Melanie Safka's "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma," Miley Cyrus' cover of "Jolene" is easily one of the best of the entire collection of songs. Cyrus easily hits all the high notes in the song as she stands in what appears to be the edge of a prairie. She's clearly passionate about the song, and the soulful vocals are beautiful enough to inspire any listener.
"Jolene" is, after more than 30 years of popularity, considered a southern music standard among many. The song has been immortalized by several covers from famous artists including a cover by Jack White released four years ago. Miley Cyrus' cover of "Jolene" comes just before the release of her next album, which is being produced by Pharrell Williams.
Miley Cyrus comes from a strong background of country singers and has been supported as a singer her entire life. Her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was the singer of the hit "Don't Break My Heart." In addition tohaving a famous country star daddy, Miley Cyrus also has a famous godmother -- Dolly Parton. The fact that Dolly Parton is Miley Cyrus' godmother makes the cover song just that much more heartwarming. - iDigital Times

They're clearly one of those people who like Miley as long as her receipts aren't being compared to their real favorite's receipts a stan. Nothing suspicious about that!
