Idk. I guess I'm always kinda surprised when I see gayness being brought up directly in older media. Like, I know that Philadelphia and Ellen and The Birdcage and Chaz came out in the 90s, but I mostly associate the period with DADT and DOMA and the backlash that Ellen recieved, which make it seem like a time when we didn't really have any visibility.

You're right, it wasn't all good. But the biggest breakthrough was finally getting Reagan to publicly acknowledge the AIDS crisis in the late '80s. That moved the conversation squarely into the mainstream and oriented it toward treatment and a cure. It also allowed the culture to develop an understanding (and empathy) for gayness beyond a disease. You have to remember that DODT was actually seen as progress at the time. Before that, gay men were just kicked out of the military.
