So I just found that the Pulse Music Boards has recaps for the VH1 Top 20 going back to late 2003, so before I update anything, I'll first add the Flavas I can get my hands on over there. I SHOULD be updating the next countdown tomorrow, though!! Meanwhile, check out some of the Flavas I was able to recover!
CORRECTION: So looking through the posts on the Pulse board, I noticed that they listed Sarah McLachlan as debuting in the last week of October instead of the first week of November. I wouldn't have corrected it, had I not remembered that in my write-ups of the Top 20 (of which the November 1 one was the first), I had originally put Sarah as going up 3 spots to #14, but when I saw that the VH1 Music Radar still listed Fuel as #17, I figured I might've just made it up. Anyway, it's all corrected now. The two videos affected were "Fallen" by Sarah McLachlan and "Falls on Me" by Fuel, the former gaining a week and the latter losing one. Their stats the weeks they fell of the countdown were:
>> Sarah McLachlan, "Fallen" [11 weeks / #14 / Peak: 04] (debuted on October 25, 2003 @ #17)
>> Fuel, "Falls on Me" [13 weeks / #15 / Peak: 10] (5 weeks in 2003 and 8 weeks in 2004)
So Sarah McLachlan fans, rejoice at her getting an extra week Fuel fans, my apologies
(P.S.: Flavas of the Week have been added to the last week of September and all weeks in October but one, I think...)
I remember lasting on the countdown for weeks and weeks and weeks, but I never realized she only hit #1 for 1 week! How was "The First Cut is the Deepest" around for so long?
^ Sheryl's run for this video was kinda like a tide, it ebbed and flowed (or rather, it rose and sunk). During its first 6 weeks, she had managed to climb up only to #13 only to then fall down to #17. It seemed like she was gonna go, but instead the video bounced back and kept rising until hitting #1 on January 10. After that, the video erratically fell to #7 in late February, only to rise up again in March and go all the way back to #2!! Then it fell down and off the countdown for good.
That's how the video stuck around for so long. WHY, though, I have no clue. One thing to remember is that the formula for the VH1 Top 20 was based on album sales, radio airplay, video airplay, and fan posts at the VH1 message board. It is possible that each one of those factors (or some combination of them) kept her bouncing back up: Say, fans in the VH1 message board voted at lot for it at first, and when their votes started to die down, the video began to get more radio airplay, which in turn boosted album sales and got her new fans who would post for her. That's my hypothesis, but I honestly have no clue how it managed to stay for so long with such an erratic run...
Wow, maybe I'm being too nostalgic, but I like all of the songs on the countdown except for John Mayer's (which I don't dislike either) and Janet Jackson's (which I didn't even remember but I don't dislike either). Still, sad Melissa Etheridge's out of the countdown...
Good debuts. though!!
Anyway, here's what to expect for next week:
* A brand-new #1 video (sorry Maroon 5!).
* Two countdown debuts by music royalty, which include:
>> The Australian queen of pop (especially in my book) telling us what color blood runs through her veins.
>> A prince giving us a lesson on music history.
* And we say goodbye, once again, to two videos, both of which managed to make it to the peak of the countdown.
And this week's debuts (including the cameos in the video that I alluded to in the clues):
Beyoncé, "Naughty Girl" (best quality on YouTube now, sadly)
Cameo by: Usher (or "Mr. Raymond," as his full name is Usher Raymond IV)
OutKast, "Roses"
Cameos by: Paula Abdul, Katt Williams, Fonzworth Bentley, Lukas Haas, Kevin McDonald, and many others (I'm sure...)
OMG PRINCE!!!!! That's the song with which I officially became a Prince fan! Kylie's debut is pretty good, too! And a good #1 video with Usher.
Here's what to expect for next week:
* THREE countdown debuts, all by three big ladies in the music business, including:
>> A female Canadian rock star in the video where her hair is cutoff and which was inspired by a video from the Spanish rock band, Jarabe de Palo.
>> Another Canadian, but this time a pop star, who DOESN'T want you to (try to) tell her do or say.
>> And an American singer, whose name is synonymous with 'success' and 'legend' (at least on ATRL), coverin a popular '80s song by Berlin.
* AND we have two ladies and a group with a lead singer who sings like a lady leaving the countdown.
Fall-Offs:
The Darkness, "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" [9 weeks / #14 / Peak: 11]
Sheryl Crow, "The First Cut Is the Deepest" [25 weeks / #17 / Peak: 01]
Kylie Minogue, "Red Blooded Woman" [1 week / #18 / Peak: 18]
Flavas of the Week
Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules, “Mad World”
Blink-182, “I Miss You”
Gavin DeGraw, “I Don’t Want to Be”
