Cole was a great and entertaining character but they really ruined his character after season 4 and dragged out the Phoebe/Cole conflict for way too long. Even Phoebe got fed up with him

I don't remember crystals/ crystal cages ever being explained, was this revealed in the comics?
No -- it was said in the show. It's the episode where the bartender lady tries to kill Prue. Earlier in the episode, she invented the cage because she thought it was a demon breaking into the manor. She ends up catching cole in the crystals; it's where her suspicion of him begins.
It's worth noting that she had it set up more like a demon alarm. The demons would get trapped in the cage and she carried a small crystal with her that glowed when a demon was trapped. It's kind of neat, really. And pretty badass.

Almost finished season 3. I think it's my favorite, Cole was such a great addition. I'm gonna miss Prue
I'm already dreading Piper's babies, Cole becoming an obsessive stalker, magic school, etc
Fun fact: that crystal cage that the charmed ones always use to trap demons with, Prue invented/thought of that. She really was super witch, lol.
She also showed Leo how to Astral Project before she died and Leo eventually teached Paige,Phoebe and Piper when they needed it the most,helping them defeat Zankou.
