Hmm, I don't really find myself wondering about whether or not the character's lacked enough depth in this series. Given that I have not read any of his other series' I will not be able to compare his characters but I do know that in Shallan's case regarding the end of book 1 you will get an answer by the end of Words of Radiance. The last 300 pages are a mess, a good mess. The last 10 pages will have you gripping your book waiting to see what's next, and that damn epilogue.
I do agree with the mess that was the slavers after the ship but again by the end of WoR you will get your answer, I assure you. Did you get to the pivotal scene regarding Jasnah and the ship? I'm leaving this as spoiler free as I can for you.
