Only it worked in, you know, every European country there is. Has been working for decades now, and everyone here is grateful for having it.
As a guide number, taken from our Austrian public health care system:
Between 16,8% to somewhere around 19% of your monthly earnings (depending on how much it is) go into the health care system. Maybe this sounds much to you (Obamacare probably isn't anywhere near that, am I correct in assuming so?), but in return you are guaranteed to receive the treatment and in most cases even the surgery you need in case you ever require it. And you will receive this help WITHOUT co-payments. Unless the treatment you require costs literally thousands and thousands of euros, there is NO CATCH. You're covered 100%.
You can also get additional, private health insurance here if you want to be in single rooms in hospitals for instance, or if you want to get any sort of treatment without the limitations that the public health care does admittedly have. But usually you won't need it, and that's a nice feeling.
Edit:
Thinking you'll never need treatment is silly. You will get old, and someday you're going to start feeling that in your back, in your bones, in your knees and ankles, you will lose your eyesight, you will fall and break a leg etc. One day you'll need it too.
