I did not know he was from Wham, and did not know he experienced so much success on his own. I am 20 and had not been very familiar with him at all.

Faith (a George Michael album) is Diamond and spawned 5 Top 5 hits, one of the biggest eras in US ever. Make It Bag (a Wham! album) also had 3 #1's, one of the most for an album ever.

Obviously he didn't continue to have huge success after the 80s so the younger generation wouldn't know him well, but to say just gays know him or not millions of households as if he's some one hit wonder is just embarrassing yourself sis.

I completely forgot that Wham had #1s too, so together with Wham and Solo he has 10 #1 songs (8 solo and 2 with Wham - actually 3 but Careless Whisper is a solo song credited as Wham - A Selena & The Scene tea).

So having 10 number ones, we can put him up there with MJ, Madonna & Janet Jackson, who all have 10 to 12 #1s too. I dare this user to say that he's not a household name ever again.

This. People just need to stop trying to generalize their own ignorance. Nobody even knew he was gay until nearly 20 years into his (huge) career. Teenage girls and grown women alike were obsessed with him in the 80s/90s.

Life for gays may have been harder in terms of acceptence in society, however going out in clubs in hope for some adventure was way more exciting than going out is today.
