Fences look so ****ing good. Both Denzel and Viola won Tonys for these same roles when Fences was revived on Broadway back in 2010. I'm absolutely here for them getting both an Oscar and a Tony for the exact same performance.
There are only three ways Fences plays out.
1. Denzel and Viola both win.
2. Denzel and Viola both lose.
3. Denzel wins and Viola loses.
I can't imagine a scenario where Viola wins, but Denzel loses.
Interesting fun fact. The last time movie to win both lead acting categories was As Good As It Gets at the 1998 ceremony, giving Jack Nicholson his third Oscar win (Denzel is also gunning for his third win).
Fences trailer SNATCHED me. Viola needs to go for lead, her win will be iconic. I'm gonna riot if she goes for supporting tbh
After watching that trailer I think it's smart for her to go for Supporting. Denzel is clearly the LEAD in the film going by that trailer. Unless more footage is released and we see more of Viola I think she'll easily win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
As her sister, the thing that pains me most of all is that in retelling the story of the Nat Turner slave revolt, they invented a rape scene. The rape of Turner’s wife is used as a reason to justify Turner’s rebellion.
This is fiction. I find it creepy and perverse that Parker and Celestin would put a fictional rape at the center of their film, and that Parker would portray himself as a hero avenging that rape.
With the 4th quarter where almost all the Oscar contenders tend to release, let's look at the few likely contenders from the first 3:
Picture, Actor - Sully: Based on a true story about a Hero + pretty good reviews + Eastwood + Hanks + $100 mil in the US
Actress, S Actor - Meryl Streep + Hugh Grant for Florence Foster Jenkins, with Meryl being more likely
S Actor - Jeff Bridges for Hell or High Water.
S Actress - Helen Mirren for Eye in the Sky, though doesn't look too likely right now
Isn't Affleck's brother a frontrunner at the monent?
Yes, but I think Denzel will attract more votes from the Academy. Casey's role is very subtle from what I've read, and ad much as I love when subtle roles win, it happens rarely
