I admit her vocals have improved a little since her debut, but that's not saying much. At this point in her career she simply CAN'T afford to be as lazy as she is, if she was on a Madonna, Janet or Britney level it would be a different story, but for someone like her who's still in her prime...well...it's just inexcusable. She doesn't really compensate for her vocals as she lacks little to zero stage presence, she isn't a fearless performer nor does she get props from people OUTSIDE of her fan base for her performances. As long as she's been out, I still have yet to be blown away by any of her performances, that's not good. And what's even worse is that it seems like she doesn't want to improve as a performer. She was the it girl during the GGGB era, but she quickly got that title snatched once Katy & Gaga came out. You would THINK Rihanna would start to drastically improve as a performer to keep up with them, esp. Gaga

She's delivering live vocals and personality. I know that isn't enough for some people, and that's fine. But I genuinely enjoy 90% of her performances and feel that she's been improving. Her live vocals now compared to 5 years ago (even Rated R era) are miles better. She isn't on the same level as the artists you mentioned, and I will be the first to admit that. Those 3 artists were more famous for their dancing than for their vocals, but for Rihanna, it's the other way around. Sure, her vocals aren't on, say, Mariah Carey's level, but she hasn't reached her vocal peak yet. Rihanna's never really had over-the-top performances like Lady Gaga. She does need to work on her stage presence as I said, but she has alot more confidence than most of the current female artists. Watch her Loud tour videos versus the televised Loud era performances and you will see a noticeable difference as well. She's more comfortable on tour than in front of a television camera (like Britney is), and she needs to work on that. She has had some terrible performances over the years, but the number is becoming fewer and fewer. I can show you some videos comparing her past performances to her current ones, and you will agree that she has improved. Again, she's still young and has time to master the performance arts.

A lot of LOUD isn't dance but it still felt generic & unauthentic, give or take a few songs. It's hard to explain because it's not an exact science to this kind of discussion- but the LOUD era just lacked. Lacked in a certain texture and richness of something from the 2 eras prior to it.
GGGB felt like the arrival of a superstar. Rated R was something that is appreciated in retrospect. LOUD is just an "oh, it's rihanna" era that just burned out fast & it seems that the next era will have the same feeling. I looked thru the WFL thread and i saw rihanna stans that were already burned out on the song.
Like KayBee said about the gourmet feast vs hot pockets metaphor.
But now i've probably ventured from my original point and not making any sense.

How old were adele, alicia, beyonce, amy winehouse,leona,..when they released their deep stuffs?
l understand your point the view but it's better for rihanna to take risks now that people are still interesting in her.l saw many singers doing great stuffs after they lost their spotlight.lt's not about her age,it's about her "moment".For example,R.Kelly was big and started doing songs like "snake" "ignition",now he is doing good music again and nobody cares, that's sad.Same can be said about ashanti (the way than l love you),JLO (brave)...
Rated R except for 2 or few ballads wasnt truly good but shows some potential.

Rihanna always gets people talking more than usual. One of the biggest popstars in the world to be honest.

Teens like her - but not as much as Ke$ha or Katy. Her concerts consist of 20+ year old girls, older guys, older gay guys, some male teens, a bunch of girl teens and older black women.

I don't get why it feels that her fans are teens to young adults. I guess it's because her singles sell at a better rate than her albums (although her album sales are decent and better than most at the moment).

Exactly, but the thing is, I like Hot Pockets. I'll **** up the 4 Cheese Quesadilla ones, but sometimes you want more than just a Hot Pocket. Sometimes you want turkey, dressing, and sweet potato pie, something completely appetizing to the palate, something that has you savoring the flavor, smell, texture, and appeal. You want a full meal. I'm sorry I'm using food metaphors, but I'm hungry as hell so it's the only thing on my mind.

I'm glad.
Don't get me wrong, I'll be the first Rihanna stan to admit Rihanna's shortcomings and mistakes. And I both understand and respect the fact that people have differing opinions and tastes in music. I realize that nothing I say will make you or anybody else like Rihanna, and that's fine. But I just want to make sure that people have the facts straight, and then they are free to draw their own conclusions.

My thoughts exactly. I love Rihanna so much, but LOUD was just there. It never stood out. It was a good album, but compared to GGGB and RR, it just felt dull.

Anyway, I don't meant to be hard on my bitch, but am I wrong for wanting her to reach her full potential?

I wasn't blown away but they weren't super bad, the 'What's my name' performance in Bergen was surprisingly good, was I slayed? no, but it wasn't a bore to watch either. And I already said earlier in the thread her vocals HAVE improved since her debut, the A.I. performance wasn't bad.
