Target is upset about the exclusivity, they wanted their cut of Beyonce's huge first week and they didn't get it.
Beyonce is fighting piracy, Target should come up with something innovative because first week digital releases MAY become the norm.

I totally agree, I think it was the best move for Beyonce. It worked flawlessly in her favor, and I'm so happy for her. Target doesn't care though. They are a business, as stated many times. It affected their sales, and it's too late to do anything about it, so they're trying to make sure nobody else wants to do it that way. They don't care when other albums have exclusive versions of the album as long as they get it on the same day; it's only an issue when it goes to digital before they get to sell it too.
They probably are considering ways to keep up with the digital times, but with what a large company it is, they can't make big decisions like that last minute just because Beyonce decided to release an album out of the blue.

It came a week
earlier than announced, exclusively on iTunes, just like Beyonce. Target specifically said in the release that it was because it went to digital before physical, and it affected their sales.
Watch the Throne was only released 4 days earlier, I guess they decided it was worth it. My point was that I'm sure Target considered it, just like many other places did, they just decided that since it wasn't a whole week, it was okay. Just because that article didn't mention them doesn't mean they were totally okay with it.
