Iggy Azalea scores the Hot 100's lone new top 10 entry this week, as "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, rockets 18-7. The first chart entry for Australian rapper Azalea continues its rapid rise, roaring 12-6 on Digital Songs (108,000, up 29 percent); 21-8 on Streaming Songs (4.2 million, up 72 percent); and 50-35 on Radio Songs (37 million, up 28 percent). The moves contribute to a big week for Azalea, as her debut full-length album "The New Classic" starts at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 52,000 sold.
How rare is it for a female rapper to send a debut Hot 100 hit into the top 10? Azalea is the first to do so since M.I.A. flew to No. 4 with "Paper Planes" in 2008. Since 2000, only one other female rapper has hit the top 10 on her first try: Lil Mama, whose "Lip Gloss" rose to No. 10 in 2007. (No female rapper had resided in the top 10 at all since Nicki Minaj, the featured act on Justin Bieber's "Beauty and a Beat," which reached No. 5 in January 2013. Azalea is also the first female rapper to sport lead credit on a Hot 100 top 10 since Minaj, whose "Starships" peaked at No. 5 in June 2012.)
With the jump for "Fancy," Charli XCX equals her best Hot 100 rank. She reached No. 7 a year ago in her sole prior chart visit, as a guest on Icona Pop's "I Love It."
As reported yesterday, Azalea could land another top 10 next week: Ariana Grande's "Problem," featuring Azalea, could sell more than 300,000 downloads in its first week and debut in the chart's top tier.
