Gaga has a big fanbase who ensure she's still profitable for her label even if the GP clock out, so they'll continue to support her as a viable investment. Even if they didn't, she has her own fortune and connections to help.
Her self-reliance is also a major bonus. It means she can write herself out of a slump without label support. Typically, if a popstar begins to flop then they fall down the pecking order - other artists get first, second, third picks of the hits. The further you fall, the less likely you'll luck out. Naturally, both label and writers are less likely to take a chance if your stocks plummet. It's a case of who gives up first - label or artist.
Not to harp on about other artists, but Rihanna is vulnerable because of both, whilst Katy is vulnerable because of the former (and the latter, depending on her solo ability). Britney and Beyonce manage because they have enough fans to support their albums and tours even if they haven't got hits. Madonna is in that category now, but before she would join Gaga and Taylor in ticking both fanbase and self reliance.
