You are permitted to accept gifts from kaafirs and mushriks, but not allowed to give them? (that's my understanding).

I'm sure it's haaram, especially if it is to celebrate the festival, because it is regarded as a false celebration.

I'd give someone a gift and state it's because you are displaying the love of Islam, rather than a Christmas gift.

You're allowed to give gifts in general. Something to do with softening hearts towards Islam. Not sure about on festivals

The gift should not be meat that has been slaughtered for the festival. It should not be something that may be used to help in imitating them on the day of their festival, such as candles, eggs, palm leaves etc. You should explain to your children the belief in al-wala’ wa’l-bara’ (loyalty and friendship vs. disavowal and enmity), lest a love of this festival or a fondness for the giver be instilled in their hearts. The gift should be accepted with the aim of softening the heart and call to Islam, not with friendship and love.
