In the "digital generation," for its pop culture influence more than anything else, hence why I said "at one point the AMAs were the Grammys true competitors but fell off after change in date and online fan-voting." Regardless, the VMAs are not a prestigious award, never came for the Grammys in popularity and the Grammys remain THE award show. There is "no 2nd to the Grammys"; it's simply "The Grammys and the other award shows."
